New Rule: Stop Saying "Sex Addict" Like It's a Bad Thing

New Rule: Stop saying "sex addict" like it's bad thing. In the wake of Tiger Woods' heartfelt apology that he gave to his fans, his friends, his foundation - and just to be safe, Elizabeth Edwards - the media has been interviewing sex addicts: on CNN one addict said, "The day Mount Saint Helens blew up, everyone was talking about it. But I didn't even know it happened because I was having sex all that day." Oh, the humanity! Please get this man some professional help soon, before he has a hot three-way and completely misses a tornado.

Now, I haven't commented on Tiger Woods much because, well, he's just a golfer and it took me this long to give a shit. But all this talk about sex addiction now - please - sex addiction is just something Dr. Drew made up because he had no other way to explain Andy Dick. And that's not just me saying that - it's also the American Psychiatric Association, which does not list sex addiction in its manual; it does not regard it as a real psychological syndrome, like delirium or bipolar disorder or any of the other things Glenn Beck suffers from.

You want to know the surest way that you can spot a "sex addict?" He's got a penis. That's why Tiger was having sex with more women than even a black celebrity needs to have sex with, and thereby threatening to unbalance the delicate ecosystem of playas and ho's.

But before Tiger moves on there's one more apology he really should make, and that's to Buddha, for dragging him into this mess and proving once again, that whenever something unspeakably tawdry, loathsome and cheap happens, just wait a few days. Religion will make it worse.

Now usually, when famous cheaters are looking for public redemption, they go to Jesus, but Tiger went old school, and claimed that sleeping with 2/3 of the waitresses in America had made him a failure as a Buddhist. He said Buddhism teaches you the way to inner peace is letting go of desire - and if that doesn't sound like marriage, I don't know what does.

Personally, if I was a golfer, I'd go with Jesus - because he's a Trinity, so when you walk with him, you've got a foursome. Christianity is for rubes. Buddhism is for actors.

And it really is outdated in some ways - the "Life sucks, and then you die" philosophy was useful when Buddha came up with it around 500 B.C., because back then life pretty much sucked, and then you died - but now we have medicine, and plenty of food, and iPhones, and James Cameron movies - our life isn't all about suffering anymore. And when we do suffer, instead of accepting it we try to alleviate it.

Tiger said, "Buddhism teaches that a craving for things outside ourselves" makes us unhappy, which confirms something I've long suspected about Eastern religions: they're a crock, too.

Craving for things outside ourselves is what makes life life - I don't want to learn to not want, that's what people in prison have to do. Buddhism teaches suffering is inevitable. The only thing that's inevitable is that if you have fake boobs and hair extensions, Tiger Woods will try to fuck you.

And reincarnation? Really? If that were real, wouldn't there be some proof by now? A raccoon spelling out in acorns, "My name is Herb Zoller and I'm an accountant." ...something?

People are always debating, is Buddhism a religion or a philosophy: it's a religion. You're a religion if you do something as weird as when the Buddhist monks scrutinize two-year-olds to find the reincarnation of the dude who just died, and then choose one of the toddlers as the sacred Lama: "His poop is royal!" Sorry, but thinking you can look at a babbling, barely-housebroken, uneducated being and say, "That's our leader" doesn't make you enlightened. It makes you a Sarah Palin supporter.

The fact that claiming to be a "sex addict" is the only was the media and public can accept being horny and rich is absurd.

Actually Buddha didn't preach asceticism, he preached "the Middle Path" and I have to agree. I spent six years of my life fulfilling my heart's every desire and I was left strung-out on heroin and not an ounce happier. I really didn't hear what Tiger Woods had to say about Buddhism but I'm pretty sure he's wrong. Buddha didn't say that desire makes us unhappy, he said that desire leaves us discontent because it never ends, but that isn't to say desire is unnecessary. Suffering is inevitable, we grow old, we sicken, we die; these are facts of life.
We also write music, compose poetry, and make love.
Yes life is full of suffering but it is full of beauty as well, I think accepting the harshness of reality makes us more appreciative, more grateful.

Great show..

I have to admit, much as I may feel inclined to Hate Bill Maher, I really can't, in all honesty, because he always manages to crack me up!!!! He takes on these sacred cows, such as "sex addiction" (which I think Does exist, but is usually used as a cover for those envious of people who get lots of sex like Tiger Woods) and deflates them, right quick. Or Left quick. Take your pick! I strongly suspect that Bill Maher is a person filled with scorn for the ordinary person. Or rather (since I hate the ordinary person, myself) he's probably one of those celebrities who really can't Stand their own fans. I must be masochistic enough to be drawn to this. But not really. If Maher didn't make me laugh so hard, I wouldn't find my way back to his unique, incredibly brilliant and hilarious comedy. I Do enjoy deflators when they serve a higher cause than mere contempt. It seems to me that Maher's comedy is equal parts contempt And humane compassion. Okay, well maybe mostly contempt, but I Do detect a generous heaping of Real compassion, as well! The Buddha would probably approve of Bill Maher. Maybe, if Maher continues to do good comedy, he won't have to come back, in his Next lifetime, as one of Sarah Palin's kids. Keep at it, Bill! That's Not a fate that even her Real kids truly deserve. Including Trigg. Or Trapp. Or Tripe. WhatEver his damn "T" name is!!!!

Why is who Tiger puts his dick into any of our business? I feel that this is a private matter. Unlike Bill, I still don't give a shit about Tiger's affairs. It's between him and his wife. If she doesn't want to live with it, she can divorce him. It has NOTHING to do with his job and it's NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. I swear, this is a nation of mindless busybodies, and it's getting worse every day. I blame religion for the insistence on monogamy (which isn't realistic for most) and for the puritanical mindset of our society that shuns the "sinner", but is really titillated by the gossip. Everyone needs to just go rent a porno, jack off and leave Tiger or who ever the fornicator dujour is, alone.

Really Anonymous? Bill Maher and those who like his comedy and commentary are morons? Upon what is this statement of yours based? It sounds like nothing but your opinion, which has been clouded by the effects of inbreeding. You know what's really stupid? Going on a blog and calling those with whom you disagree names, but not being able to back up your statements. Go back to the Tea Party websites where you belong. They love to make baseless statements and call names. And you can tell Sarah Palin that I called you a RETARD, because you are!

Bill Maher you do not scare me. I've watched you on Larry King and I just read your blog on Tiger Woods. I have not seen you on HBO because I do not pay for HBO. But back to my reason for writing this comment...
You seem to me like someone who just trys to scare off people or get them to follow you. I would not be either of those people. You don't scare me because I can see right through your insecurity. You act like you are so tough and have all the answers. You don't. You have a big mouth and shoot it off a lot. I think you are searching just so many people are. I think you just dare people to disagree with you or prove to you how you are wrong. I'm not a talented writer or speaker... but I have deep understanding of life. I challenge what you say.

Regarding "sex addict"...well, people use sex to escape just as much as booze or drugs or working too much. I have life experiences that confirm that to me. There is so much that you don't understand. I feel bad for you. You are a smart guy, I will give you that. I also bet you are a kitten inside. Anyway, just remember, YOU do not understand everything. Someone as simple and unfamous as me might just know more than you.

Buddhism is a philosophy. The idea of reincarnation was added later by religious people. Buddha explained that there is no 'self'. If you are "reincarnated" you must exist. In a way, Buddha was the first atomist. When you die, you become a part of everything else (your atoms?). In his teachings, Buddha talks about the previous incarnations of his energy (atoms) not of himself. If you take it at face value, these are stories to help us understand what we should do to be good.

Call it a religion if you want. Most buddhists today don't actually follow what Gotama Buddha said anyway.

I truly don't want to take on the Buddhists (aren't they supposed to be a rather peaceful lot?) but I Like what Bill Maher said about them and their annoying religion. Damn. Nothing guilt-trips me More than Buddhism and the Dalai Lama! Now, 1st of all, let me preface this by saying that I'm one of those highly annoying "spiritual" people. I like to think I haven't a clue, as to what is after death, but for me, it's nice to believe in Something. Not an old god w/a beard who's terrified of gay people getting it on, surely. At Any rate, I can throw off at least Some of the catholic guilt (plus, LOVE that incense and effigy deal), but the Buddhists!?! So Much harder to negate Them. They have this moral High Ground, plus, the Dalai Lama is like a living Saint to people (true confession time: he often gets on my nerves). Commenting on Tiger Woods, like he did. Shut up! What, you've got Nothing more Important to worry about, Dalai? I do enjoy the idea of reincarnation. Until I remember that it means having to come back Here and be w/the Tea Baggers Again. Oh well. Peace to All. Or, should I say: Namaste???

Haventdecided yet, why do you say that Bill tries to scare people off? Because he says things that people might not like? Are we all supposed to agree on everything and not express our opinions if they don't fit with what others believe? In a free society, that doesn't happen. I don't always agree with Bill, but he has sometimes approached a subject in a way I hadn't thought of before. One thing I will give Bill is that he doesn't tow any party or religious line. He differs with the left on issues like the death penalty and political correctness and he differs from the right on, well, quite a lot. In any event Haventdecided yet, I'm not sure what your point was. If you don't like him, don't read his writings or listen to his shows. If you do like him, then tune in-it doesn't mean you have to agree with him or like what he says all the time. Bill doesn't profess to know everything, but he does have opinions (as do we all) and he's not afraid to say what he thinks (as is his RIGHT in the USA) He's not trying to "scare off" anyone, and I'm quite sure that he doesn't really give a shit whether you like him or his work or not.

P.S. What does whether you know as much as Bill have to do with anything? Is everything about you? And what's with the "kitten inside" remark-are you trying to psychoanalyze the guy? If so, why don't you look up the term "narcissism" since it seems to be what you suffer from.

brandonj said...

To all those who have their panties in a wad because Bill said Buddhism is a crock-if you are so certain of your religion, why do you care? In my opinion, Bill made some valid points about Buddhism, as he has made valid points about other religions in the past. They all have their bullshit myths that make no sense. In this case, it happens to be the whole belief system around the Dalai Lama and reincarnation. Granted, neither of these were taught by Buddha, and not all Buddhists believe in them. But to an outsider, it would really appear that Buddhism is doing the same thing as other RELIGIONS do in creating myths and superstitions to keep followers in their "place." I was disappointed however that Bill didn't mention the fact that Buddhism has caused FAR less harm in it's existence than most other religions. Comparing it to Islam or Christianity is apples and oranges. But what this really boils down to is, what do you care? Are you threatened by disagreement? If so, why? Believe what you believe and let Bill believe what he believes. We'll all find out who was right in the end-or if Bill is right, we'll blink out of existence and it just won't matter. Getting pissy because Bill dissed Buddhism and eastern religions seems to indicate a lack of adherence to the tenets of those religions. I doubt Bill even reads this blog and I seriously doubt he's going to change his mind. In any event, everyone just needs to smoke a joint, chill out, and get the hell over it.

First of all, I am a Christian, and I love watching Bill Maher. Although he mocks my (and everyone's) religion, he does not offend me because my beliefs teach me that God gave men and women the freedom of choice, and it's not up to me to make a choice for someone to choose to believe or shove it down their throat. Bill is entitled to have his own opinions. We don't live in a theocracy; we live in a democratic republic. Therefore, people control this government (not the world, just the government) and this government represents people of all walks and religions. If the majority of the people want something legalized that is ungodly, it should be. Christians are only people, not God. Only God can give or take away someone's right to choose how to live, and from what I've read in the bible, everyone still has a choice (with it's consequences, of course!). Bill is okay with me. I like his platform, and I like that I don't agree with everything he says. Also, I think it speaks highly of him, in comparison to some of these right-wingers, that he is not afraid to have INTELLIGENT people as guests on his show who oppose him. And as for the anonymous person, judge not!!! You must not have a life if you can find time to come on somebody's blog and insult him and his supporters!!! So you don't think he writes well... so what? Maybe he's not a good writer... and? So let me ask, how many stadiums are you selling out? How many book deals do you have? and where's your HBO series? Don't be a hater; find something better to do with your time. hmm, Moron, eh? A moron is a person with little intellect who cannot communicate at their age level. So you're telling me you bought a book from a "moron?" Maybe your moronic nature is what has left you dissatisfied.

Just pointing out that I wasn't threatened about Bill's comments about Buddhism, just correcting a few of his facts. I totally agree that Buddhism is a religion as well as a philosophy and like all religions comes with its rituals, myths, and contradictions. Siddhartha told his followers to be skeptical of everything and everyone even of himself, it's my own personal opinion that he didn't want to be worshiped as a god, but who can be sure. Like Jesus of Nazareth the religions centered around these great mens teachings didn't spring up till after their deaths.
I am not a Buddhist so I am no authority on these matters. I was raised as a Tibetan Buddhist though I am ethnically Chinese, but became an atheist at an early age so my opinion may not mean much but here it is...

Buddhism is a "middle way" and does not teach all 'wants' are bad, just the unwholesome wants.

Bill Maher talks like a hedonist, but is actually more of a secular humanist - hedonist. He still has some moral code to live by. It may not be a religion, but he still supports help for the poor, health care, etc. A true hedonist who only cares about his own wants, ignoring everyone else would not be liberal about helping others. Also there would be no way to criticize Bush or Cheney, because they are only doing what they "want."

His skit was funny, but a raccoon cannot say that he was Herb Zoller from Brooklyn because he does not have the cognitive ability to do so, just as a human baby cannot do so. All of us were born one day, but we don't remember it. Just because we don't remember it does not mean it did not happen. The same is true with re-birth. The part about monks interviewing two year old babies to look for the 'reincarnation' of the previous lama is found only in Tibetan Buddhism, not the myriad of other forms of Buddhism.

He said that in the Buddha's day "life sucks and then you die" made sense, but now we have Tivo and movies, etc. Actually the entertainment has not changed much. In ancient times there was live theater, just as we have now on Broadway and in the movies and Tivo. I disagree with him and hold that today too, "life sucks and then you die" still applies. It is timeless. There can be moments of happiness, with socializing, parties, and other forms of entertainment, but these are all temporary and often even these are filled with some degree of suffering, jealousies, anger, misinterpretations, etc., etc.

He has been bashing the Western religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam for his whole career, so I suppose it is only fair that he does some skits about Buddhism and other Eastern religions, but some of his 'facts' were a little off, to say the least.

To me, Buddhism is a lot like Christianity b/c in a way they can both be religious and philosophical at the same time. Also, in both, you are aspiring a greater consciousness or spiritual awakening. In both, you are achieving pretty much the same goals that one cannot attain by an intolerance of growth or lack of humility.
I think that the problem that most people (whom I've encountered)who don't respect religion have is that they quote or observe people who misrepresent their own principles. And even atheists do that.
I think the truth of the matter is that we all have something in us that drives us, and for a lot of people, they don't take the time to recognize some of the things that are inside of them, either because they don't have the unction or because they choose to ignore it.
In Bill's case, I think he could easily be convinced, he just needs to recognize his own purpose and his impact in the world and stop hiding from himself. Trust me, he wouldn't have the type of show he has if he didn't have a purpose. He should ask himself what is his purpose and how or why did he come to that conclusion.

Astute observations...and a comment: Health care will really never work in the US, because in countries where it is half way sustainable the government restricts the income of doctors ("You want to be a doctor? Fine. But you can't earn more than $100,000 a year").
Stop thinking of doctors as God....set up treatment centers staffed by nurses who can write prescriptions...the average experienced nurse can treat most complaints ("You got a cold? Wowsers... Two things -

1.) You know you guys (specifically the ones getting offended) are all arguing over commentary made by a comedian, right?

1a.) This explains how Al Franken got elected in Minnesota - apparently 'comedian' is a job prerequisite for 'serious social commentary' these days.

1b.) Oh wait, that's right, Al got elected because the government's a joke now... So if that happened, why are we all taking THIS seriously again?

1c.) Good job Al. Ten points.

2.) I think the best thing to point out here is the amusement value of the whole situation : Tiger really is rife for jokes right now, and as an athlete in golf - that's a treasure in itself. I know someone's probably beaten me to the punch(line) on all of these by now, but still...

2a.) It's a bad magic golf trick - 'And that's how Tiger turned his 5 wood into a 9 iron'.

2b.) Is that how you get a 'hole in one'? How many stroke penalties did he get?

2c.) Where are all the golf hos hiding at anyways? Aside from the 18 on the course proper, I've never seen them anywhere... have you?

2d.) And finally... This is a sport where THE ONLY GOAL is to literally get your balls into as many holes as you can. Did you really expect something different to happen here?

- i know, i know.... my math is terrifyingly poor.

Bill Maher's knowledge of Buddha matches that of Sarah Palin.

Your rant on Buddha is as insightful as Bush's 'they hate us for our Freedom'

Why do i care? Well i like your shows enough to maybe educate you a little bit.

Buddha was against all 'ism' and 'ist' because he knew people look for all kinds of crutches/identifications to give up the use of reason. In fact he would not be in favor of even Buddhism.

The only 'reincarnation' that Buddha ever talked about was the kind of itch that you have in every episode to bring up the name of Sarah Palin.

His philosophy was not that 'Life Sucks and they you die'. It was more like 'you are pretty miserable anyway till you know how your head works', and let me show you an approach where you can truly live with a free mind rather than be attached to outcomes/ideas/your view of your own self. If he had talked about giving up desire, tantric sex would not have existed.

Well i will leave you to your misery of finding out what he truly said. Till then you can enjoy pop buddhism.

How dare you put your provable logic and reason and objectivity above faith? You are so mean. Just because Sarah Palin isn't careful what she says doesn't mean she's wrong, or stupid. I mean just look at the self serving corrupt politicians we have currently. Its obvious that being smart or honest or articulate isn't important to get elected. You don't know she'll do a worse job than any of these boobs, do you? I just have faith she will do more, and that should be good enough for you.

These Buddhists are all wrong too. Thats just a primitive Son worship cult. Reincarnation? Thats because they worship the Son and the Son rises every morning. Thats why they think they are going to come back. That is so dumb.

I'll be praying for you Bill but I don't think its going to be enough. You have to repent your wickedness and start doing decent things. You should be more like that Glen Beck fellow on Fox News. I can see the serenity in his eyes. He is so nice, I just know God is using him to do His works. Surely he'll be justly rewarded when he dies.

You can start by turning over to the church all that evil money you made with that blasphemous movie.

nEVILle IShtar-RA-EL,

First, you're right that I didn't properly read your comment. And for that I apologize. I should point out that I wasn't responding to your comment solely (at least it wasn't my intention), but when I read the first few lines of your comment and saw the name Sarah Palin being used in a positive manner (which obviously isn't the case, and if I had read it thoroughly I would've seen what you were actually saying), that's why I wrote what I wrote.

Still, the point of my post was to share a BBC video of Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry arguing for atheism. (It wasn't a "demand for cash", as you put it. I'm sorry that I sometimes sign off with a link to my site. It's a stupid habit, and I apologize.)

It's also worth pointing out, I believe, that we appear to be on the same side of the issues at hand, or in a more general sense at least. So, although I've attempted to correct what I previously wrote, perhaps you could tone down the anger a bit.

CNN: Liberalism, atheism, male sexual exclusivity linked to IQ

HERS Foundation said...

The U.S. is incredibly provincial about sex, particularly when it comes to female sexuality. Rather than use the anatomically correct words for female organs, we have to use euphemisms or our blog posts are restricted.

Where else could 620,000 women's sex organs be removed every year without their informed consent (when requisite information is withheld there is no informed consent)? We're outraged at female genital mutilation in other countries while we ignore the most mutilating female surgery right here in America. It's a $17B a year industry. It's a powerful thing to do, to desex women and have it be legal and profitable.

It's time to stop being such a polite society. No uterus? No uterine orgasm. Another woman's sex organs are removed every minute of every hour of every day.

Be part of the solution, learn about female anatomy and female sexuality at http://www.hersfoundation.org/anatomy and tell every woman how important her sex organs are all of her life. The uterus is not just a baby bag, it's a sex organ.

some dood said...

HERS Foundation: your blog is very well organized and you seem to be following the issue like no one else; but, what's the goal? Is it to raise awareness or is there a following of people who want to see political change?

Surgical Assault said...

Bill, you're one of the few people who would have the balls to bring this out in the open. You need to have a panel of Nora W. Coffey, President of the HERS Foundation, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) and State Representative Bruce Borders (Indiana) on your show. There is an atrocity going on in the United States where our medical doctors are removing the uterus and ovaries of women for profit. This has been done to nearly half the population of women in the U.S., totalling over 22 million who are living today. Other than Dr. Oz reporting that 83% are unnecessary and warning women of the dangers, it gets no media coverage while it's done to another woman every minute of every day. Bill, ovaries are gonads, just like your testicles, and these doctors are misleading women and castrating them by the millions for profit. You have your balls, but millions of women don't at the hands of these greedy doctors. Check out the Conference information at www.hersfoundation.org/
conference.html.
Read the blog: www.hysterectomyinformation.
blogspot.com/.

No one is listening Bill, so these doctors can just keep on mutilating women. These doctors count on this issue being silenced so they can keep doing their dirty deeds.

Gracie said...

So glad you have your gonads so you can enjoy sex, but to millions of women who were castrated at the hands of their gynecologists, sex is no longer enjoyable. Sure wish we all had our gonads (ovaries). Lets do a show on this. You want to learn more, go to the HERS Foundation web site and hit the blog.

HERS Foundation said...

some dood, you're right on the mark! The HERS Foundation is doing both, education that raises public awareness and political action.

HERS has counseled over 900,000 women, men and children about female anatomy, the functions of the female organs, and the consequences of removing the uterus and ovaries. 98% of the women counseled at HERS who were told they needed hysterectomies, discovered that, in fact, they did not them.

HERS goal is to create a law that will compel doctors to provide women with HERS video "Female Anatomy: the Functions of the Female Organs" at least 48 hours before they are told to sign a hysterectomy consent form.

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) will deliver the Keynote Address at HERS Hysterectomy Conference on April 24th, 2010 in New York. http://www.hersfoundation.org/conference.html.

Another speaker will be Rep. Bruce Borders (IN), recently introduced a Hysterectomy Informed Consent bill. He is passionate about educating the public and changing the law because his wife was hysterectomized, and as he said to the legislators when he introduced the bill at the January 25th, 2010 hearing, he and his wife were lied to about the consequences of the surgery.

Did you know that when the uterus is removed women have a 3X greater incidence of heart disease, and when they are castrated (73% of women are castrated when the female gonads, the ovaries are removed) the incidence is 7X greater than intact women?

Come to the conference, and spread the word!

Bill,

Why should we assume that if reincarnation is factual, "there would be proof by now?" Fusion has been real for billions of years, yet we didn't have the capacity to "prove" it until the mid-20th century. Was fusion false before then? Was our inability to prove it any kind of proof of its falsity? And why is "by now" the appropriate timeframe to measure when we "ought" to be able to prove reincarnation? I'm not saying there's scientific proof -- I'm saying that the lack of scientific proof in and of itself proves nothing. This should be even more apparent if you consider quantum physical theory that says we live in a 3-dimensional world imbedded in an 11-dimensional universe. Why should we be able to see the big 11-dimensional picture from a 3-dimensional framework? I'm not trying to convince you regarding reincarnation -- I'm just saying that logically, your argument is flimsy. Maybe there's emotion driving your thinking process, as much as there is in the people you make fun of?

Anonymous said...

Reincarnation + Bill Maher = fuck, what are you thinking?

Try this. I didn't say it, Bill Hicks did.
"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here’s Tom with the weather."

Ball that, motherfucker.

We are all eternal connected consciousness. Death is an illusion. Everything you were taught since birth is fairy tales.

Everything. Everyone.

You make it up as you go.

In this context what is emotion? Its just color added to flavor the grub that feeds your head.

Why oh why are you asking the comedian questions about multidimensional quantum physics? You are flattering yourself. Punk!

I'll piss on your bonfire anyway.

Fusion? You still don't understand it. The model of the Sun as a nuclear reactor in which fusion explosions occur to drive its energetic engine is beautiful, but wrong! Einstein said something like, 'do not trust a hypothesis because it has symmetry'. Your NAZI scientists apparently hid some deep knowledge.

Study current data about Jupiter. Black star, indeed.

Hi, Bill

Seriously, I want to invite you to consider something: Are you willing to confront the quality of your own arguments? Are you willing to take an honest look at whether what you're saying is the result of intelligent thought or the rationalization of an emotional rejection of something?

I used to be an atheist, until I was fortunate enough to have experiences I couldn't explain scientifically. And I went to MIT, so I'm not scientifically impaired -- I just had to give up my resistance in order to be in integrity with myself. Maybe we could talk about that some day. In the meantime, my point is that I understand wanting to tear down the stupidity of conventional religion. But the fact that conventional ideas about God are stupid means what about the existence or nonexistence of God? Nothing, right?

Maybe you're thinking that you've explored completely and found no rational God-based philosophy, therefore this proves there is no God. It wouldn't, but I challenge the exhaustiveness of your search. There are esoteric teachings on this planet which make vastly more sense than conventional Christianity, and are consistent with what science (i.e., quantum physics, not Newtonian mechanics) have to say about the Universe. If you like, I'd we willing to share them with you. Send me a message at koakes@c4.net, with some sort of way for me to verify that the message is really from you. I'll challenge you a lot more thoroughly than you're likely to be challenged by Bible-thumpers, and we can have some fun in the process.

Take care,

What I'm suggesting to you is that this whole atheism shtick is a phase. At some point, it stops being so compelling. It starts to feel empty, and then we start being more honest with ourselves about its intellectual limitations. Am I overgeneralizing? Is it different for you? I don't know -- let's find out.

I believe in a set of teachings which fuse and reconcile Christianity, Hinduism and Freudian/Jungian psychology. I think you'll be intellectually powerless against them, because they're actually true. Aren't you at all tempted to play with that?

SkepticalofMaher said...

Hey dood,

The way I look at it, there don't have to be "sides," and believing in a Creator doesn't mean anyone "can't do their own thing."

I chose to challenge Bill's argument because I occasionally find it entertaining to pick apart what I see as faulty logic, and because I believe atheism -- while a natural phase to pass through -- isn't fulfilling because it's not in tune with reality. So I'm essentially offering to do Bill (and myself) a service by sparking his own realization that, on this particular point, he's full of it. He's free to engage my argument or to ignore me. I might disagree with him, but I would never disrespect his free will. And, I don't take any of this personally. We're all on the same team, and we can all get along . . .

Peace,

-- K.O.

I am a christian, as you are Bill, but you should take a look at how the Buddhist monks can identify the ones they elect to be their leader.
If you are not able to see it, think about the reasonable line of ideas the actual leader brings to the world, and please, tell us if they are wrong.

I know this comment has nothing to do with this article, but I could not find an e-mail or mailing address to send Bill a letter. Also, I figured that this post would be as likely to be ready by Bill as any letter.
I really like your show, and I agree with a lot of things you say. However, I get really frustrated when you group all religious people as one being. It is true I am Christian. It is true I am Catholic. It is true that I am Liberal. It is true that I am a Scientist who sees and understands the facts behind things like evolution and global warming. I understand that stem cell research is needed and important to people like my best friend who has cystic fibrosis. It is true that I realize I could be completely wrong about the existence of God. I just want to point out that Atheism is a belief system as well. It is not fact that God does not exist, just like it is not fact that God does exist. I choose to believe God does exist, and that does not make me a nitwit.
I know that a lot of religious people are judgmental of Atheists, but it is hard not to be so defensive to someone who equates their belief system with Santa Claus.
Anyway, I like your show despite your disdain for my lifestyle. Keep up the good work, and maybe try to be a little more open minded about people's beliefs.

Hey Bill, Maybe Woods is the reincarnate of a cat! That would surely explain the around the clock "I'm in heat so I'll fuck the closest pussy around", and the incredible pussyness towards his wife!

You make good input. I'd hang with you before any of these opinionated assholes.

I think you are probably shooting ideas that are over their heads. You need to get out into more varied social conditions to test this. Such as, vacation! Roadtrip!

As soon as you can escape the hood, go discover the world. In the meantime, religion is bullshit but the true believers are a real threat to your immediate security and future bigtime!

And for the drunk one, Bill Maher is an atheist and that is not a christian cult.

Mr. Woods, with all respect. oops meant disrescet, obviously misunderstood the "fore" to mean "foreplay". Thats not a bad thing.

Bill,

You often have good points, and very quippy remarks. Arguably one of the best Heckler's, which I wouldn't like to debate. However, you lose much of your audiance when you mention "magic underpants" and other slight remarks about religion. Some people spend a lifetime looking for a devine connection, and never find it. Other's seem to be blessed. Perhaps you are not one of the "elect".. and live by the motto "Misery needs company". Refer to 5 points of Calvinism/ docterine of election. BTW I do assume your "magic underpants" makes refference to Mormon's who have a ceremony for their sacred garments.. do explain.

Karen,

Its a bad thing if by foreplay you mean a moment of private concentration followed 1 stroke, or just standing there watching to see how close the balls get to where you intend.

I suppose scrutinizing 2 year olds to find the reincarnation of the Lama is much weirder than believing that a Jewish carpenter was the son of God, of virgin birth, walked on water, made wine from water, and was raised from the dead. The major difference I've seen between Buddhism and other religions such as Christianity and Islam is that unlike Jesus and Mohammad thousands of people have not been maimed, murdered, and persecuted in the name of the Buddha.

Hey Bill, This is Tony. To make a long story short, i sense that you're not too favorable with what you deem to be religion. Christianity(based on the teachings, life, and ministy of Jesus Christ) is not just a "religion" its a relationship with God. God loves you and all people from all religious backgrounds. God sent his son Jesus to died for the sins of all people because he Loves us. The Bible says in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosover believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life."

I just don't think it's as good as Bill thinks it is. Maybe it was because he was preaching to the converted when I saw it.

Bill, love your show, but sometimes (too often) the choice of guests ruin it! e.g., PJ O'Rourke (sad, irrelevant, unfunny drunk who can't shut up) and that ditzy airhead chick next to him. I'd seen that "woman" before and she totally sucked then too.
But when you DO have the right sort of guests, the show is sublime, it rocks - and we all love you for it. So let's work on that part of it, pleeeeeease!
