Earlier this month, The New York Times had a fawning profile of Paul Singer, a 67-year-old conservative billionaire who has spent $10 million on gay rights and gay marriage initiatives. He's also a big Romney supporter. So I'm reading this and I'm wondering, "why is this guy for gay marriage?"
The article doesn't give me a clue until the ninth paragraph, when we find out that he's got a gay son. Yes, once again we have a conservative who has become enlightened because of a family member. Well, good for him. Yet at the same time he's raising a ton of money for a candidate who supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. So I guess the message this guy is sending to his gay son is, "I love you, but not as much as I'd love a reduction in the capital gains tax."

So does having a gay son clarify your judgement or cloud it? It reminds me of all the people who believe the person who murdered their loved one should get the death penalty.

ReplyDeleteShut up. Can you read? This thread is about gay rights, not who's pissed off at Maher this week. Furthermore, I think the comment Maher made was a little in poor taste, but I also don't agree with Brady's comment about the three black women that Maher dated being "ladies of the night" and "hookers" that Maher paid for. Coco Johnsen was a Playboy cybergirl--not a hooker. Karrine Steffans had the life of an exotic dancer--the life most girls who are raped at the age of 13 or younger fall into.
Maybe before you fall into bandwagon media, you should develop a brain and pay attention. I don't think Brady's comments against people of his own race are any better than Maher's offcolor humor. Just because they dated Bill doesn't mean they're hookers, it means they're desperate. (Haha)

ReplyDeleteIn 2002 I had to take a Multi-Cultural, Class, and Gender Studies course in college. At the beginning of the class, our professor asked how many people would be in support of equal marriage laws. Of fourteen people, myself, and two gay men in the class were in favor.
At the end of the class, everyone was in favor. They were also in favor of gay people teaching their pre-school children, but were leary of straight men teaching children so young as pedophilia is a disease of by and large straight men. All were in favor of gay political figures, the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", and gay adoption.
At the end of that class, our professor announced that in the ten years of her teaching the course, she'd never had the entire class be in support of gay rights. I think this is a quietly growing trend, and was we progress as a nation, I do believe that we will start seeing more people from the Republican party coming out of the closet, because there is less fear. Fear is still there, but until it happens, it's all just progress.

And oh yes, he DOES favor a flat income tax, fighting for the little guy. Facts and logic trump emotion, and would seem obvious, but then I don't watch nor listen to TV nor Mr Beck.

A new model of government is necessary with the people representing themselves within an internet Congress. Appropriation by committee doesn't work, Too much tax money is stripped to Washington DC and then funneled to the one percenters. Safety nets should be localized to the county government-- not privatized, including Social Security. Let's fire Congress and keep the safety net cash out of Washington. When President Obama starts doing his own thinking instead of running on Ivy league thinking He might be able to keep Washington from screwing things up worse.

Just like many issues members of the Republican party can only actually see clearly,the ones that affect them or the ones they love.
ReplyDeleteWhen asked if they would have been comfortable sending their own sons to the war in Iraq, most say no. If the war was one of a worthy cause, like actual defense, people answer differently.
People who have family members who are gay are way more likely to be supportive of gay rights regardless of their religion or politics.
One more example is that people who support the health care bill are the ones who have worked hard and still struggled without affordable health insurance for years.
Shouldn't we all be able to think, this doesn't affect me now, but what if it did? What if I couldn't take my baby to the doctor? What if my son was killed in a bull shit war? What if my son were constantly persecuted because of who he loved?
If people would step back and ask, what if it were happening to me, Things would be a lot different.
