New Rule: Rich People Who Complain About Being Vilified Should Be Vilified

New Rule: The next rich person who publicly complains about being vilified by the Obama administration must be publicly vilified by the Obama administration. It's so hard for one person to tell another person what constitutes being "rich", or what tax rate is "too much." But I've done some math that indicates that, considering the hole this country is in, if you are earning more than a million dollars a year and are complaining about a 3.6% tax increase, then you are by definition a greedy asshole.

And let's be clear: that's 3.6% only on income above 250 grand -- your first 250, that's still on the house. Now, this week we got some horrible news: that one in seven Americans are now living below the poverty line. But I want to point you to an American who is truly suffering: Ben Stein. You know Ben Stein, the guy who got rich because when he talks it sounds so boring it's actually funny. He had a game show on Comedy Central, does eye drop commercials, doesn't believe in evolution? Yeah, that asshole. I kid Ben -- so, the other day Ben wrote an article about his struggle. His struggle as a wealthy person facing the prospect of a slightly higher marginal tax rate. Specifically, Ben said that when he was finished paying taxes and his agents, he was left with only 35 cents for every dollar he earned. Which is shocking, Ben Stein has an agent? I didn't know Broadway Danny Rose was still working.

Ben whines in his article about how he's worked for every dollar he has -- if by work you mean saying the word "Bueller" in a movie 25 years ago. Which doesn't bother me in the slightest, it's just that at a time when people in America are desperate and you're raking in the bucks promoting some sleazy Free Credit Score dot-com... maybe you shouldn't be asking us for sympathy. Instead, you should be down on your knees thanking God and/or Ronald Reagan that you were lucky enough to be born in a country where a useless schmuck who contributes absolutely nothing to society can somehow manage to find himself in the top marginal tax bracket.

And you're welcome to come on the show anytime.

Now I can hear you out there saying, "Come on Bill, don't be so hard on Ben Stein, he does a lot of voiceover work, and that's hard work." Ok, it's true, Ben is hardly the only rich person these days crying like a baby who's fallen off his bouncy seat. Last week Mayor Bloomberg of New York complained that all his wealthy friends are very upset with mean ol' President Poopy-Pants: He said they all say the same thing: "I knew I was going to have to pay more taxes. But I didn't expect to be vilified." Poor billionaires -- they just can't catch a break.

First off, far from being vilified, we bailed you out -- you mean we were supposed to give you all that money and kiss your ass, too? That's Hollywood you're thinking of. FDR, he knew how to vilify; this guy, not so much. And second, you should have been vilified -- because you're the vill-ains! I'm sure a lot of you are very nice people. And I'm sure a lot of you are jerks. In other words, you're people. But you are the villains. Who do you think outsourced all the jobs, destroyed the unions, and replaced workers with desperate immigrants and teenagers in China. Joe the Plumber?

And right now, while we run trillion dollar deficits, Republicans are holding America hostage to the cause of preserving the Bush tax cuts that benefit the wealthiest 1% of people, many of them dead. They say that we need to keep taxes on the rich low because they're the job creators. They're not. They're much more likely to save money through mergers and outsourcing and cheap immigrant labor, and pass the unemployment along to you.

Americans think rich people must be brilliant; no -- just ruthless. Meg Whitman is running for Governor out here, and her claim to fame is, she started e-Bay. Yes, Meg tapped into the Zeitgeist, the zeitgeist being the desperate need of millions of Americans to scrape a few dollars together by selling the useless crap in their garage. What is e-Bay but a big cyber lawn sale that you can visit without putting your clothes on?

Another of my favorites, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann said, "I don't know where they're going to get all this money, because we're running out of rich people in this country." Actually, we have more billionaires here in the U.S. than all the other countries in the top ten combined, and their wealth grew 27% in the last year. Did yours? Truth is, there are only two things that the United States is not running out of: Rich people and bullshit. Here's the truth: When you raise taxes slightly on the wealthy, it obviously doesn't destroy the economy -- we know this, because we just did it -- remember the '90's? It wasn't that long ago. You were probably listening to grunge music, or dabbling in witchcraft. Clinton moved the top marginal rate from 36 to 39% -- and far from tanking, the economy did so well he had time to get his dick washed.

Even 39% isn't high by historical standards. Under Eisenhower, the top tax rate was 91%. Under Nixon, it was 70%. Obama just wants to kick it back to 39 -- just three more points for the very rich. Not back to 91, or 70. Three points. And they go insane. Steve Forbes said that Obama, quote "believes from his inner core that people... above a certain income have more than they should have and that many probably have gotten it from ill-gotten ways." Which they have. Steve Forbes, of course, came by his fortune honestly: he inherited it from his gay egg-collecting, Elizabeth Taylor fag-hagging father, who inherited it from his father. Of course then they moan about the inheritance tax, how the government took 55% percent when Daddy died -- which means you still got 45% for doing nothing more than starting out life as your father's pecker-snot.

We don't hate rich people, but have a little humility about how you got it and stop complaining. Maybe the worst whiner of all: Stephen Schwarzman, #69 on Forbes' list of richest Americans, compared Obama's tax hike to "when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939." Wow. If Obama were Hitler, Mr. Schwarzman, I think your tax rate would be the least of your worries.

Great post, but really difficult blog for reading long copy. Please change the format? White ink on black backgrounds are really tough on the eyes.

While you're at it, I'd suggest moving off Blogger.

Thanks for this. As one of those poor Americans who gets most of their tax dollars back come April, I would happily pay 39% if I'm ever lucky enough to make that much money. Although, I wish more tax dollars would go to health care, education, and infrastructure instead of war... but that's another topic for another day.

P.S. Ditto on the white on black background. Ouch.

Great post - but the real issue should be about where the tax dollars are being spent ... Spending trillions of dollars on wars in Iraq & afghanistan is insane & immoral , especially when those dollars are sooo desperately needed elsewhere . . . and that should be shouted long & hard from every pulpit in every church everywhere . . .

Sorry, this refers to your 9/24/10 show. You had Andrew Breitbart on the show who is a known GOP cutthroat and incapable of real conversation. At least have someone who can articulate real counter arguments. Very pathetic episode. I could have done much, much better frankly. Why don't you bring some informed citizens on occasionally, instead of clueless celebrities?

To clarify my last comment I meant counterweight to Andrew and the other one. The Family Guy was useless.

It was sad that Ann Druyan was drowned out of the "conversation" - if one can call it that - by Breitbart and Holmes, both of whom had nothing original or analytical to say.

I hope you'll give Ann Druyan another chance to speak in a more hospitable forum. Breitbart and Holmes have not only shown no respect for anyone or anything - they are callow bullies. Don't ever have either of them on, they've warn out their welcome. It was too appalling a spectacle this time, and those bullies have gone too far.

It was very disappointing. Those two had nothing to offer but trite rhetoric. Ann Druyan would have offered something of value if she'd been given half a chance. She wasn't.

It is appalling how paralyzed Bill et al appear when faced with the strident right wing talking points about health insurance reform, climate change, etc.
And how could you let Breitbart not address his criminal smear against Shirley Shered, even if just to acknowledge he was being sued for slander.

The right speaks with obliterating certainty while you are not sufficiently informed & prepared to counter their assertions. It requires more than eye rolling.

Greece is not bankrupt because of universal healthcare. Canada is solvent because they did not get bankrupted by investment bankers...and they have a fine healthcare system.
Breitbart should have been nailed on the fact that the basic principle of any insurance demands the largest risk pool. This allows for cost efficiencies. The private sector (managed care) has had over 20 years to show how the market and profiteering would bend the cost curve; it failed.Cost went up, quality went down. Free care for the very sick 50 million uninsured is mandated at all ERs- these needless high costs are paid by us now already.

A good conservative should understand how insurance works and it is not "too expensive" or "big government taking our liberty" to have everyone kick in. Health insurance is not a commodity. Letting people die is not like letting people live without a an HDTV.

The argument that small business is hurt by Obama policies is not fact; the derivative market robbed the economy of trillions. All those clever financial innovations mostly made investment bankers billionaires.Nothing was generated.

Please read up...Michael Lewis, Joseph Steiglitz, Ruobini on financial markets-- David Himmelstein,& Steffi Woolhandler (MDs @ Harvard) on financing healthcare.
Don't go mute when bombarded with right wing double talk. Or invite an articulate smarty.

Richard Cory
Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich, richer than a king,
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

I am an immigrant from Europe, raised Catholic (13 years of private Catholic schools) and consider myself as a conservative. This means that the Democrats here in the U.S. are hardcore right-wing to what calls themselves “Right” in Europe. So the Democrats and there viewpoints sometimes seem a bit right-wing to me, but that’s fine.

I am a big fan of “Real Time” and always enjoy the show a lot. If it comes to Religion, Politics, social issues, etc. Bill pretty much says what I think. So it’s quite easy for me to be a fan. However, there’s one single, isolated topic I can’t agree on with Bill. And this is his opinion about Climate Change.

Honestly, I’m just not getting it. Bill is undoubtedly a very intelligent man, eloquent and always questioning things. However, if it comes to climate change, he seems to fall completely for the mainstream opinion. I’ve been waiting desperately for him to ask some inconvenient questions, but it just doesn’t happen.

I am not in the oil industry or anything alike. I’ve been with the green party movement in Europe when it initially started back in the late Seventies. I’ve cleaned riverbeds, took part in demonstrations, etc. I do consider myself to be “environmentally concerned”. But I do not buy the story of the manmade climate change.

As I mentioned before, I have been raised a Catholic and spent 13 years in private Catholic schools. Throughout those 13 years I managed it, to constantly stay on the verge of being kicked out of these schools. Why? Simply because I was asking questions. I did not criticize or anything, I just kept on asking and questioning just as Bill does in his movie “Religulous” – one of the greatest documentaries of all time.

Bernie said...

But why doesn’t Bill ask any questions in regards of the climate change? Why does he apparently accept everything that’s been told in the media? Why does Bill refuse to use common sense particularly in the discussion about this matter?

I am no scientist, no meteorologist, geologist, or similar. I am just asking. In the history of mankind, man always tried desperately to explain things outside of his actual influence. That’s exactly what did lead to the development of religions, the invention of supernatural Gods, etc. in order to be able to have some explanation handy.

Peoples like the Incas and Mayas had no doubt that slicing up a couple of humans would subsequently have a positive influence on the goodwill of the Gods and the weather. It was quasi scientifically proven. In yesterdays discussion Ann Druyan didn’t get tired of pointing out, that “95%” of all scientists worldwide found proof for manmade climate change. Ok, but 600 years ago 100% of all scientists had already found proof for the fact that the planet is all flat.

That was about the same time as when the Vikings left Greenland because they couldn’t grow crops and breed cattle there anymore since the climate became colder and colder. Today the news’s headlines report that the climate change enables the Greenlanders to grow crops. The ice is melting, etc. Well, why did the ancient Normans and Vikings call the place “Green”Land in the first place?

Bernie said...

In the early Eighties it has been a widely accepted, scientifically proven fact that all forests in Western Europe will die within 20 to 25 years because of manmade pollution. There was no way of working around that. I remember this very well. The forest was dying because of acid rain, pollutants, the ozone layer hole, greenhouse effect, etc.
Also it was inevitable that living in Australia would become impossible due to the hole in the ozone layer.

Ok, since then aerosols have been banned, but the entire hole wasn’t discovered any earlier. Nobody – literally nobody – can tell whether the hole had been there for years, decades or millenniums before. On the other hand we do know (because of ice-core drillings in the Arctic) that the temperatures have been much higher in the past. Remains and seeds of tropical plants have been found in mid- and northern Europe. Ice-Core drillings also show that the CO² level used to be much higher in the past then it is today.

Like I said: I am not a scientist. I trust in things I can see and feel and which appear 100% logical to me. I do understand that many arguments of the supporters of the climate-change idea appear to be logical. But so do some of the arguments of the 9-11 conspiracy supporters at first glance. Take a second look or start asking questions and you will come to different conclusions.

There is an intense discussion among scientists whether there is actually a manmade climate change or not. Bad news always sells better and becomes conveyed a lot more. In the 1850’s scientists were arguing whether mankind is going to be extinct by the “Cold Equalization” or the “Heat Equalization” (read it up in your history books, maybe you’ll find it). There was no doubt that either one would kill the human race. The question was only which one. And the discussion went on until the vast majority of scientists finally agreed on that we’re all going to die because of the inevitable meteor-impact.

Just one question: Which headline would sell better:
“Millions about to die due to severe storms, caused by climate change!”
or:
“Everything’s like it’s been for the past 200 million years, we’ll be fine!”

Priceless, priceless New Rule. You said what desperately needs to be said and so well.

I hope you have Ann Druyan on again soon. She is a brilliant lady with a much needed defense of science, and she was shamefully drowned out by the two rightwing hacks.

I wish you had not let Breitbart and Holmes get away with pushing the Right's big lie about healthcare reform. Most of the people who opposed the healthcare bill opposed it from the left, not the right, preferring the public option or single payer.

The right has gotten away with leaving out this inconvenient fact and thereby deceiving their followers and too many in the media and the public into believing the big lie the majority of Americans agree with the right when only about thirty percent do. They have even used this deceit to provoke violence and threats of violence against our elected representatives.

People like Breitbart, the perpetrator of the Shirley Sherrod hatchet job, who peddle hate and clever deceit in the service of greed, are about as low as kiddie porn purveyors, perhaps even worse.

Dear Bill,

I have long admired your facility for peeling an issue to it's shameful hidden core. Nobody does it as well as you, in my opinion.

This issue of the whiny rich is no different. And as I read on, laughing and nodding, something slowly occurred to me.

Aren't you rolling in dough yourself? Lordy, honey, you've been enjoying well deserved success for a while now. Is it safe to assume that you wouldn't mind giving another 3% to the g'ummit coffers?

And that issue aside, Would another 3% taxed on anybody actually get to the folks who need it, considering where our current tax dollars are going?

Bill, I always watch your show but how could you have Andrew Breitbart on it? He was responsible for the video scam that drove ACORN out of business. His Shirley Sherrod fiasco was just one more example among many of his complete lack of a moral compass. Why reward him with being on your show? I really think one conservative is more than enough. We've heard all their talking points before.

Dear Mr. Maher,

I was very surprised to hear you are a socialist. I did not know that. Apparently the definition changed somewhere along the line and now you're one. Which means I'm probably one now too, which also comes as a surprise, as I was pretty damned sure I wasn't. But that was under the old, pre-anyone-who-disagrees-with-a-conservative-is-a-socialist definition, I suppose. And you didn't correct the accusation, so I can only assume Mr. Breitbart was correct.

Also very surprised to hear that Andrew Brietbart is a "journalist." I was given to understand he was a dishonest political hack, but....Journalist he is. So you said. They must have changed that definition too.

Bill, absolutely love this week's New Rule. Last time I was this impressed was when you destroyed Bush in the wake of Katrina, and I was one who lost everything material in the storm.

But the show this week was terrible. Breitbart is a thug, and having him on, and letting him carry on as he did without calling him out on his very public and utterly egregious activities was basically giving him an open mike and almost a job well done. I understand you can't burn all your bridges, you are in the business of hosting people, often people you can't see eye to eye with politically. But Breitbart's a whole other matter.

Again, thank you for this week's New Rule, and I hope you at least sent a nice fruit basket to Ann Druyan for Breitbart's behavior.

And thought that Reagan did more to hurt the country than help. Now that I have your attention and respect, let me change that. I am a libertarian and wish that Bill would have at least a libertarian perspective sometimes. When its always left arguing with right and neither idea being what I agree with, I get outraged to think that a my perspective isn't heard. Bill once claimed to be a libertarian and we can tell that's not true. I(Libertarians)want less government and more freedom. Why can't liberals get behind that? Vote Libertarian! Less government means less taxes for everyone, not just one class or another. More freedom to live your live the way you want and run your business how you see fit. Why is this bad?

Freedom is a relatively new idea, having only had it here on earth for a couple of centuries. Many are ready to give up on it for socialism or fascism.

This whole tax cut debate makes me nuts because it seems to me that there's a simple fix. Both Republicans and Democrats say they need the money to create jobs. So, convert the upper two percent tax cuts into tax credits for creating jobs. Create a job, get a tax credit. Then use any un-credited money for stimulus to create more jobs. All of a sudden, everybody's working at creating jobs instead of fighting over the money. I don’t understand why this hasn’t been suggested by someone already.

For more than 100 years, American Capitalists have captured the Federal Govt. the exception being FDR's Administration. Otherwise, regulations that serve a sensible economy have been eroded and mainly Congress has dispensed special subsidies and programs that provide monopolies or oligopolies to our business community. The Tea Party (GOP) will only exacerbate this long-standing trend

Just a quick comment to Rabelais, first a great handle: one of the wittiest writer-philosophers. Second, your proposal makes a lot of sense and builds on the Race to the Top idea in education. Put them on the stop. Put up or shut up.

Thankfully I've been the benefactor of rich--and generous--people who have been vilified by idiots like you and your Obama. They just have enough sense that far more can be done to help others, and the economy, if they can do so instead of turning it over to the current "burro-crats" to waste the bulk of it on their own self-serving earmarks and pork barrel lunacy. But, then, you wouldn't comprehend that as you pathetically continue to fry what few brain cells you have as you plunge further into insanity!

Nice post, Bill, been looking through your blog and you just got a new fan. Now if only I could get HBO in my dorm room...

Bill, quit calling yourselves Progressives. If you received anything out of your public education you would know that what you are promoting is simple Socialism and Communism! I am a conservative and I am not a religious zealot! I also am a self made man who is not super rich, and I am not going to be forced to pay for mandatory healthcare premiums so that your fat unhealthy welfare and glorified welfare recipients can abuse themselves on my dime. You and your socialists can pay for all your handouts through a special assessment tax levied on those of you who want to give everyone undeserved handouts!

You are just as much a capitalist pig as any other rich person. People are living in dumps while you live the high life.

Anonymous,

You mean you have been the beneficiary of 'rich & generous' people. Those aren't the genocidal gluttons being vilified here. Suggest you reread the post.

Peas.

Great post Bill, PLEASE keep up the good work. I so look forward to your moments of sanity in this otherwise insane political environment our country is currently in.

Bill,

that was brilliant insight.

Please Bill, tell us what you REALLY think.

"Of course then they moan about the inheritance tax, how the government took 55% percent when Daddy died -- which means you still got 45% for doing nothing more than starting out life as your father's pecker-snot."

If you were somehow able to tax 99% of Bill Gates' 40 billion dollars at the time of his death, his heirs would still get $400,000,000. If you assume that his children will be 35-44 when he dies, they would get this inheritance when the average net worth for someone that age is 51,575 dollars. (CNN Net worth calculator)

Tax the billionaires, at least charge them for using our military to advance their agendas. Meg Whitman doesn't know what to do with it so she gives it to Madison avenue con artists? I can spend 130 million dollars much, much better than that. Just the interest would restore the lost wages of all state employees who make wage labor < $100,000 - thats the working people who do the real work and took a coerced pay cut for the team, so their coworkers would not be laid off.

I regret that I have but $1,000,000,000 to give to my country.

Wait, strike that.

I regret that I have but $1,000,000 to give to my country.

Wait, wait, thats not right either.

I regret that I can only contribute (legally) up to $5,000 to the campaign of the carpetbagger who will work for me.

Yeah, use that. OK, now you can hang my stand in.

Well Bill,

I'd rather the wasteful whores tighten their belt. You see, after they screw the wealthy with this tax increase they will apply it to everyone else. Harry Reid has already got a bill to screw *working* singles making >50K & couples making > 100K. In addition Congressional Budget Office reports that Congress has not approved the deferment of the Alternative Minimum Tax as they have for the last 9 years. This means more taxes.

Does our government need to give billions annually to the criminals running Mexico? Or trillions to defend Israel? Israel seems to have no problem exterminating their enemies...

By contributing to these regimes our government makes us complicit in their atrocities. These crimes are destructive of American values and image worldwide; social engineering at its worst.

So I'll defend the wealthy to not be taxed without representation, when and if they would just stop supporting these assholes to help them rob me.

I will never listen to anything you say again after hearing your comments on The George Lopez Show. That was extremely bigoted and hateful.

You are pathetic Bill Maher and I will PRAY for you. The non-Democratic half of this country are not stupid dogs that have to be led into the future. We are not mindless hunks of flesh that need the government to take care of us and our every need. No, we are just the other half of this country that do not happen to agree with YOU. Additionally, we also like the truth which means I have to correct your statement from the George Lopez Show. You said the approval for the Health Care Bill skyrocketed 15 percentage points after it was approved. That fact(oid) was totally incorrect. Prior to the Bill passing, approval was 45% and did not budge after approval. We want the truth Bill Maher, and we are not too stupid to understand it.

It's sad how really deranged you sound. I think your anger and hate will only hurt you in the end. Look inward as to why you have such hatred for others, you might learn something.

Since we are going to have to redistribute wealth, let's start with yours.

Will you be doing a commentary piece about the Move Forward woman who was assaulted and stomped by the Teabaggers in Kentucky? He should be in jail. I do not bring up the Nazi Party often because I feel it dilutes their horror, but in the 1930's the same tactics were used by them to crush their political opponents. If the Tea Party wins will we be forced to wear tri-corner hats? Thanks, Barry

On your October 29, 2010 show, your guest Lawrence O'Donnel said that the Oboma Administration did not know how bad Detroit (the auto industry) was when Obama was campaigning. Since 2005 GM had been making losses on the order of $3 billion per quarter and bleeding billions in cash. It's too bad for the nation if O'Donnel's assessment of Obama is correct. It implies that Obama was illinformed well before he was elected and was "surprised" at how bad the economy was. This is shameful. Remember that the March 2009 stimulus package was to reduce the unemployment rate to 8% by year-end 2009, not the 9.6% we have now.

I watch your show, and sometimes I agree with you and sometimes I don't.
Here are some opinions I have, I wanted to share with you, about what's happening in America today.
Capitalism is a system that works when you have a dream to make the best product in the World, you treat your people like part of your family, you inspire them, and through hard work you achieve your dream.
On the other hand Capitalism has been replaced by Corporate Capitalism which is like cancer cells. All they care is themselves. They look like normal cells to fool the immune system not to eliminate them. They have no patriotic feelings for a people or a country, and they kill the host, then they move on to a new host, and start all over again.
Nobody wants to pay high taxes. But people on the right seem to believe that if you cut taxes like in Reagan's time, all of the sudden the economy will recover.
Since in Reagan's time you couldn't invest in China and India, the Corporations had little choice but reinvest back in the USA. So that's the reason the economy bounced back. And maybe in Reagan's time people were more proud to be americans.
But now even if you cut the taxes completely, the american worker still can't compete price wise with the chinese worker.
The investor will say I still get few chinese workers, for the price of you. Since the job of a business man is to make money, and doesn't identify with the american worker anymore, the outcome is what we see. That's the reason that Bush's tax cuts didn't work on reviving the economy.
The one supposed to protect the american worker is the Government. But we know that both parties are in for the Corporations and not for the people.
Daddy Bush started the NAFTA and Clinton finalized it. They sold a bill of goods that the free market is good for all of us.
Yes that could work if we would produce anything, yes!
But since we don't produce anything anymore the free market won't work for the american worker.
So it's clear the both parties are in cahoots with the Corporations and not with the american people.
I'm not saying let's reintroduce the tariff, but let' start a discussion right now, before something snaps and the american people go into the streets.

I work at one of the hottest fast food places on the market..Chipotle. I was promised the future of making it to top managment with in six months. And all the luxires of free health care and stock options. Two years later I see on Mad Money Chipotle is making 100% plus profit in the fucking stocks and not giving shit back to the people who make the company....me. Just like a normal corporation the low man on the totam pole gets fucked. Even if you can turn a 200% profit on your buy in at the price of a Non-American producing an American product at the price of the american Tax Payers is pretty FUCKED UP if you ask me. I work just as hard but dont get double the pay. Wat The Fuck!!!!!!!!!!!

Regarding Zach Galifianakis and his smoking of a joint on your show, but mostly about the audience reaction, I wonder if your audience would be so quick to applaud if they understood that by and large Americans are irresponsible and in 2009 Driving while high on Marijuana accounted for 322 fatalities on our highways. Strange that this Country would applaud another substance that is a threat to public safety on the road.
