Mission: Failure

By Bill Maher

Obviously, last month’s jobs report sucked. Only 69,000 new jobs were created – about half what economists expected – and the worst number in a year.  The economy has to create about 120,000 jobs every month just to keep up with the increase in population.

That’s just the hard data.  But here’s how I know the news was really bad: Republicans on TV could barely contain their smiles.  To them, an economy back in the shitter means only one thing: “Woo hoo! President Romney!”

The biggest problem they have with this jobs report is that 69,000 jobs created is 69,000 too many.

Since day one, Republicans have cock-blocked any effort to create jobs. They tried to filibuster the stimulus – one thing that did create a ton of jobs – even though roughly one third of it was tax cuts. They filibustered last summer’s American Jobs Act. They took the government hostage over the debt ceiling, which led to our credit rating being lowered and destroyed any potential for recovery last summer.

This is worse than rooting for failure – it’s ensuring failure. People don’t like it when I bring up the “t word” – treason – but I haven’t heard any convincing arguments suggesting Republicans have done anything but try to thwart efforts to create jobs since Obama became president.

We know where the worst job losses are coming from: the public sector. We could hire back the 300,000 teachers who lost their jobs because of the recession right now.

We can also accelerate private sector jobs by doing the massive infrastructure projects that we need to do sometime anyway – why not now, when borrowing money is free? It doesn’t make any sense not to do that unless you’re rooting for the economy to remain stalled. And no, don’t say the deficit. What really hurts deficits is a stalled economy.

Also, when Democrats would criticize the war in Iraq, they got accused of hurting the morale of the troops. What about hurting the morale of the economy? Talking it down definitely creates negative animal spirits that make the economy sucking a self-fulfilling prophecy. On this front, the worst is yet to come: Romney’s Super PACs are going to spend a billion dollars over the next few months telling us how much the economy sucks.

By the way, as bad as the jobs report was, if you watched the news, it was like Lehman Brothers collapsed again. Yet, 69,000 jobs were created. You know how many on average per month were created under Bush, even after you take out his worst months from the Great Recession? 66,000. You know how many for Bush if you include the recession months? 11,000. And ALL his job creation came from public sector growth. He lost private sector jobs, where Obama has created about 3.8 million.

That’s the truly horrible news – as bad as this job report was, it was much better than the average over the last decade. Though it would be nice if both parties were interested in doing something about it.

Sorry Bill,
Your assertions do not hold up. I'm sure the fascists are have a good laugh at our expense, but I didn't see Holder or Warren or a single democrat busting any of the gangsters either. Obanka haven't put away a single embezzler or con artist, and contrary to your previous claim that what they did was not illegal, some hard charges are finally materializing against GS, Boa, JPM and their international cartel. Sadly they are pushing patsies under the bus to take their place, and Obanka is onboard with it.
The fact is these banks have stolen trillions from municipalities nationwide on top of the trillions Obama handed them, and now we are to accept that they pay a few hundred million in fines, keep their vast loot and remain free? Rich and poor, left or right political class and petty thieves, they are all predators and parasites.
Not for much longer.
You asked for it, brother.

“So you think that money is the root of all evil?” said Francisco d’Anconia. “Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can’t exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil?

“When you accept money in payment for your effort, you do so only on the conviction that you will exchange it for the product of the effort of others. It is not the moochers or the looters who give value to money. Not an ocean of tears not all the guns in the world can transform those pieces of paper in your wallet into the bread you will need to survive tomorrow. Those pieces of paper, which should have been gold, are a token of honor–your claim upon the energy of the men who produce. Your wallet is your statement of hope that somewhere in the world around you there are men who will not default on that moral principle which is the root of money, Is this what you consider evil?

Ayn Rand said...

“Have you ever looked for the root of production? Take a look at an electric generator and dare tell yourself that it was created by the muscular effort of unthinking brutes. Try to grow a seed of wheat without the knowledge left to you by men who had to discover it for the first time. Try to obtain your food by means of nothing but physical motions–and you’ll learn that man’s mind is the root of all the goods produced and of all the wealth that has ever existed on earth.

“But you say that money is made by the strong at the expense of the weak? What strength do you mean? It is not the strength of guns or muscles. Wealth is the product of man’s capacity to think. Then is money made by the man who invents a motor at the expense of those who did not invent it? Is money made by the intelligent at the expense of the fools? By the able at the expense of the incompetent? By the ambitious at the expense of the lazy? Money is made–before it can be looted or mooched–made by the effort of every honest man, each to the extent of his ability. An honest man is one who knows that he can’t consume more than he has produced.’

Ayn Rand said...

“To trade by means of money is the code of the men of good will. Money rests on the axiom that every man is the owner of his mind and his effort. Money allows no power to prescribe the value of your effort except the voluntary choice of the man who is willing to trade you his effort in return. Money permits you to obtain for your goods and your labor that which they are worth to the men who buy them, but no more. Money permits no deals except those to mutual benefit by the unforced judgment of the traders. Money demands of you the recognition that men must work for their own benefit, not for their own injury, for their gain, not their loss–the recognition that they are not beasts of burden, born to carry the weight of your misery–that you must offer them values, not wounds–that the common bond among men is not the exchange of suffering, but the exchange of goods. Money demands that you sell, not your weakness to men’s stupidity, but your talent to their reason; it demands that you buy, not the shoddiest they offer, but the best that your money can find. And when men live by trade–with reason, not force, as their final arbiter–it is the best product that wins, the best performance, the man of best judgment and highest ability–and the degree of a man’s productiveness is the degree of his reward. This is the code of existence whose tool and symbol is money. Is this what you consider evil?

Ayn Rand said...

“But money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver. It will give you the means for the satisfaction of your desires, but it will not provide you with desires. Money is the scourge of the men who attempt to reverse the law of causality–the men who seek to replace the mind by seizing the products of the mind.

“Money will not purchase happiness for the man who has no concept of what he wants: money will not give him a code of values, if he’s evaded the knowledge of what to value, and it will not provide him with a purpose, if he’s evaded the choice of what to seek. Money will not buy intelligence for the fool, or admiration for the coward, or respect for the incompetent. The man who attempts to purchase the brains of his superiors to serve him, with his money replacing his judgment, ends up by becoming the victim of his inferiors. The men of intelligence desert him, but the cheats and the frauds come flocking to him, drawn by a law which he has not discovered: that no man may be smaller than his money. Is this the reason why you call it evil?

Ayn Rand said...

“Only the man who does not need it, is fit to inherit wealth–the man who would make his own fortune no matter where he started. If an heir is equal to his money, it serves him; if not, it destroys him. But you look on and you cry that money corrupted him. Did it? Or did he corrupt his money? Do not envy a worthless heir; his wealth is not yours and you would have done no better with it. Do not think that it should have been distributed among you; loading the world with fifty parasites instead of one, would not bring back the dead virtue which was the fortune. Money is a living power that dies without its root. Money will not serve the mind that cannot match it. Is this the reason why you call it evil?

“Money is your means of survival. The verdict you pronounce upon the source of your livelihood is the verdict you pronounce upon your life. If the source is corrupt, you have damned your own existence. Did you get your money by fraud? By pandering to men’s vices or men’s stupidity? By catering to fools, in the hope of getting more than your ability deserves? By lowering your standards? By doing work you despise for purchasers you scorn? If so, then your money will not give you a moment’s or a penny’s worth of joy. Then all the things you buy will become, not a tribute to you, but a reproach; not an achievement, but a reminder of shame. Then you’ll scream that money is evil. Evil, because it would not pinch-hit for your self-respect? Evil, because it would not let you enjoy your depravity? Is this the root of your hatred of money?

Ayn Rand said...

“Money will always remain an effect and refuse to replace you as the cause. Money is the product of virtue, but it will not give you virtue and it will not redeem your vices. Money will not give you the unearned, neither in matter nor in spirit. Is this the root of your hatred of money?

“Or did you say it’s the love of money that’s the root of all evil? To love a thing is to know and love its nature. To love money is to know and love the fact that money is the creation of the best power within you, and your passkey to trade your effort for the effort of the best among men. It’s the person who would sell his soul for a nickel, who is loudest in proclaiming his hatred of money–and he has good reason to hate it. The lovers of money are willing to work for it. They know they are able to deserve it.

“Let me give you a tip on a clue to men’s characters: the man who damns money has obtained it dishonorably; the man who respects it has earned it.

“Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper’s bell of an approaching looter. So long as men live together on earth and need means to deal with one another–their only substitute, if they abandon money, is the muzzle of a gun.

Ayn Rand said...

“But money demands of you the highest virtues, if you wish to make it or to keep it. Men who have no courage, pride or self-esteem, men who have no moral sense of their right to their money and are not willing to defend it as they defend their life, men who apologize for being rich–will not remain rich for long. They are the natural bait for the swarms of looters that stay under rocks for centuries, but come crawling out at the first smell of a man who begs to be forgiven for the guilt of owning wealth. They will hasten to relieve him of the guilt–and of his life, as he deserves.

“Then you will see the rise of the men of the double standard–the men who live by force, yet count on those who live by trade to create the value of their looted money–the men who are the hitchhikers of virtue. In a moral society, these are the criminals, and the statutes are written to protect you against them. But when a society establishes criminals-by-right and looters-by-law–men who use force to seize the wealth of disarmed victims–then money becomes its creators’ avenger. Such looters believe it safe to rob defenseless men, once they’ve passed a law to disarm them. But their loot becomes the magnet for other looters, who get it from them as they got it. Then the race goes, not to the ablest at production, but to those most ruthless at brutality. When force is the standard, the murderer wins over the pickpocket. And then that society vanishes, in a spread of ruins and slaughter.

Ayn Rand said...

“Do you wish to know whether that day is coming? Watch money. Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion–when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing–when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors–when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you–when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice–you may know that your society is doomed. Money is so noble a medium that is does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a country to survive as half-property, half-loot.

“Whenever destroyers appear among men, they start by destroying money, for money is men’s protection and the base of a moral existence. Destroyers seize gold and leave to its owners a counterfeit pile of paper. This kills all objective standards and delivers men into the arbitrary power of an arbitrary setter of values. Gold was an objective value, an equivalent of wealth produced. Paper is a mortgage on wealth that does not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it. Paper is a check drawn by legal looters upon an account which is not theirs: upon the virtue of the victims. Watch for the day when it bounces, marked, ‘Account overdrawn.’

Ayn Rand said...

“When you have made evil the means of survival, do not expect men to remain good. Do not expect them to stay moral and lose their lives for the purpose of becoming the fodder of the immoral. Do not expect them to produce, when production is punished and looting rewarded. Do not ask, ‘Who is destroying the world? You are.

“You stand in the midst of the greatest achievements of the greatest productive civilization and you wonder why it’s crumbling around you, while you’re damning its life-blood–money. You look upon money as the savages did before you, and you wonder why the jungle is creeping back to the edge of your cities. Throughout men’s history, money was always seized by looters of one brand or another, whose names changed, but whose method remained the same: to seize wealth by force and to keep the producers bound, demeaned, defamed, deprived of honor. That phrase about the evil of money, which you mouth with such righteous recklessness, comes from a time when wealth was produced by the labor of slaves–slaves who repeated the motions once discovered by somebody’s mind and left unimproved for centuries. So long as production was ruled by force, and wealth was obtained by conquest, there was little to conquer, Yet through all the centuries of stagnation and starvation, men exalted the looters, as aristocrats of the sword, as aristocrats of birth, as aristocrats of the bureau, and despised the producers, as slaves, as traders, as shopkeepers–as industrialists.

Ayn Rand said...

“To the glory of mankind, there was, for the first and only time in history, a country of money–and I have no higher, more reverent tribute to pay to America, for this means: a country of reason, justice, freedom, production, achievement. For the first time, man’s mind and money were set free, and there were no fortunes-by-conquest, but only fortunes-by-work, and instead of swordsmen and slaves, there appeared the real maker of wealth, the greatest worker, the highest type of human being–the self-made man–the American industrialist.

“If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose–because it contains all the others–the fact that they were the people who created the phrase ‘to make money.’ No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity–to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words ‘to make money’ hold the essence of human morality.

You can't kill an idea said...

“Yet these were the words for which Americans were denounced by the rotted cultures of the looters’ continents. Now the looters’ credo has brought you to regard your proudest achievements as a hallmark of shame, your prosperity as guilt, your greatest men, the industrialists, as blackguards, and your magnificent factories as the product and property of muscular labor, the labor of whip-driven slaves, like the pyramids of Egypt. The rotter who simpers that he sees no difference between the power of the dollar and the power of the whip, ought to learn the difference on his own hide– as, I think, he will.

“Until and unless you discover that money is the root of all good, you ask for your own destruction. When money ceases to be the tool by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of men. Blood, whips and guns–or dollars. Take your choice–there is no other–and your time is running out.”

“Politicians are put there to give you that idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land, they own and control the corporations, and they’ve long since bought and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the State Houses, and the City Halls. They’ve got the judges in their back pockets. And they own all the big media companies so they control just about all the news and information you get to hear. They’ve got you by the balls.
They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want; they want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I’ll tell you what they don’t want—they don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interest. You know something, they don’t want people that are smart enough to sit around their kitchen table and figure out how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don’t want that, you know what they want?
They want obedient workers, obedient workers. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it. The table is tilted folks, the game is rigged. Nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care. Good honest hard working people, white collar, blue collar, it doesn’t matter what color shirt you have on. Because the owners of this country know the truth, it’s called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.”

Hey Bill
I thought your panel was interesting. Amy Goodwin is a smart woman of integrity, and quantifying the politicization of Liz Winstead's uterus by monetizing it is scarier than the government launching into a domestic scam as corrupt as the pentagon, but the rest of your guests are suspect because they are so fat from feeding at the political trough while the rest of us got robbed. Tell Liz, if all she can clear is $350 a month, she needs to hook up with octomom's college trained, CA bar approved scumbag for a better deal. Cleaner and more fun than keys; even Newt could do better by her.
Enjoy your summer vacation, you lucky dog.

What both parties could do, instead of enriching themselves and ignoring the rest of us, is to at least look after the laws and regulations they put in place for our so-called "recovery". That is the job of the US Government right? The jobs report(s) do suck, but with few working solutions, why not not at least make sure what we know "works" has been implemented correctly in the first place so we can shore up our people and the economy until things get better.

If one this has been proven in tough times, it is that unemployment insurance provides a better bang for your buck than any other solution we have so far for tough economic times like these. The unemployed spend this aid right away, putting dollars back into the economy. If you do not implement emergency programs like this correctly you create great waste and suffering, while subverting the intent of the "recovery efforts".

I have been trying to expose a "problem" with the Emergency Unemployment Compensation "program", that acts as a serious "cock block" to the unemployed "struggling workers and families" who are trying to access these emergency designated funds (under the ARRA). Based on an appeal case I won in California (CUIAB A0-265448), it would seem that the Department of Labor published the EUC08 guidelines, that were issued to ALL STATES, with SERIOUS IMPLEMENTATION ERRORS, that effectively SHORT the unemployed out of this important "recovery aid". The Q&A sections of these instructions give contradictory instructions to the State Ui Agencies that do not comply with the Federal Administrative Law and Regulations. These mistakes have turned into an incorrect policy, which forces people to be paid from older and lesser claims instead of more recent and higher paying ones. This has been going on for years. I managed to convince judges in California that this was incorrect, and in my case I had these harmful determinations reversed, restoring almost $3000 in denied funds.

These errors have multiplied over years in every state. People are owed thousands of dollars in each case (up to $9000 in some case over just 26 weeks). Whether by mistake or on purpose, the US Government has let these errors go on and in fact tried to support them. They failed in my case and since have been engaged in a 6 month delay and cover up attempt, flagrantly ignoring their oversight duty under three federal laws while violating other laws and regulations for correct EUC08 Determinations, Payments and Adjudication.

Maybe someone like you could draw some attention to this issue that seems to have NO SUPPORT from the US Government, who also have REFUSED to investigate NOR REFUTE the clear appeal victory I won that exposed these errors, affecting more than 4 million + claimants nationwide and the $40+ billion dollar unemployment trust fund. I am fighting them right now with this Recovery Fraud Complaint: RATB-2011-DOL-9DF2506-0, but they seem determined to not admit their HUGE MISTAKES.

I think the whole government seems to rooting for the recover to fail. They made a multi-billion dollar error four years ago in this key program, and now while stripping the growing unemployed of their benefits, they want to bury this mistake instead of doing something that could inject serious capital back into the economy.

Investigate the EUC08 Errors

"if it wasn’t for whites y’all blacks would be in Africa where they’re to damn lazy to hunt the abundant wildlife, stinking like shit, hungry, filthy, aids infested and swatting flies of your asses……well ok the only thing that has really changed is we moved you from Africa lmfao!!!!! But i agree that it’s totally the white mans fault…. If you go to Walmart and buy a t.v. That won’t work you don’t go buy 500 more! The second load of slaves should have been sunk. 10 of YOU PEOPLE can’t run a damn McDonald’s but one of you is running the country wtf!!!!"

Demacrabs and Repugs alike, who run the show, and are running it right into the ground full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes style, ALWAYS put their own ass before the average American every time. And the Media has failed us. They are too busy playing chase the "gaffe" to report on ACTUAL NEWS LIKE THIS:

The HUGE STORY that the media and public are missing is that the US Government has IMPROPERLY denied millions of Struggling Workers and Families, Billions of Dollars in ARRA Emergency Designated Funds, in the form of Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC08).

Mistakes that the Department of Labor published FOUR YEARS AGO, have caused the unemployed to get MUCH LESS AID and FOR MUCH LESS TIME, when these claimants were otherwise eligible for higher weekly benefit amounts for longer time periods based on the MOST RECENT BENEFIT YEAR and "Base Period" that their Regular Unemployment Compensation were determined from. The DOL is forcing people to follow the mistakes in their Q&A sections about "Multiple EUC Claims", for all EUC08 Determinations, Payments and Adjudication NATIONWIDE.

BUT, these errors, that force payment of any remaining balances from any older EUC claims before paying the most recent one, DO NOT COMPLY with Title 20 Chapter V Part 615.5(2), which says clearly that there is NO ENTITLEMENT TO ANY REMAINING BALANCE after the claimant goes back to regular compensation claim (after they returned to work from a prior EUC08 Account). The DOL says that they must FULLY EXHAUST the FULL LESSER CLAIM FIRST. The ACTUAL Administrative Law of the United States says otherwise at 20 CFR 615.

This has forced people off of unemployment all together much sooner, and contributed greatly to the reduced so-called "unemployment rate". Had I not won the Standing Decision that reversed this harm in CUIAB Case A0-265448, I would not be counted right now.

The Feds want to keep this information from the media in public. Since my 10/20/11 Appeal Victory: They have ignored my Precedent request for that case in California. They have ignored oversight duty under three federal laws. Their Guidelines for EUC08 contain errors that do not comply with the Federal Administrative Law.

While I tried to trigger oversight and get the Feds to Act, they ignored me and instead on 2/7/12 THREATENED THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA WITH THE LOSS OF ALL EUC08 BENEFITS FOR ALL CLAIMANTS, if my case was made a precedent, whether EDD and the CUIAB could appeal and overturn my case or not either.

2/14/12 California responded and agreed to not set the Precedent, but did not even try to take my case to court, saying it would not be "necessary" so instead they cut a deal to pay me State Funds, "in secret", to keep the Feds happy.

But, one Freedom of Information Act Request later, and I have caught them in their cover up attempt of my PRECEDENT.

I have exposed this Abuse of Authority and much more:

"If Regulations are Broken in the Forest, and "Nobody" Sees and Hears them get broken..."

Here is one of our greatest example of "Mission Failure" to date:

Mr. President, there is a serious problem with the EUC08 program
by corazonroto (aka jerkyspace)

The federal state unemployment insurance program began all the way back in 1935. It was started to help people who lost their jobs by giving them a safety net while they looked for new work. This also helps keep dollars flowing into the economy when times get tough. Additional Extended Benefits were first made available in the 1970s. Emergency Unemployment Compensation was added in the early 1990's recession.

When our 21st century economy turned sour, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program (EUC08), started up once more in 2008 under Public Law 110-252. As the downturn worsened, EUC08 was added into the American Re-investment and Recovery Act of 2009. The ARRA states that "Each amount in this Act is designated as an emergency requirement and necessary to meet emergency needs". At its peak, through much of early 2010, nearly 6 million Americans were collecting just these benefits. According to the BLS, since 2008 there have been 29,748,954 EUC08 Claims (for all tiers) that have paid a combined 663,688,610 weeks of benefits. The amount spent so far = $97,433,246,688 for EUC08 benefits to present day.

What do you think would happen if something went terribly wrong with this system? What if the federal government made an implementation error at the start of this program and let that error go for four years+?
