The Right Shift

By Bill Maher

Good news: last month, for the first time in weeks, Congress passed a bill! And wait until you hear what you get: by a vote of 78 to 20, the Senate voted to extend the life of the U.S. Export-Import Bank. …People, please! Control yourselves!

Yes, the Import-Export Bank. It’s been around for 80 years. They re-upped it for another three. Now, what do you 80% of Americans who disapprove of the job Congress is doing have to say about that?? Hit the links, Speaker Boehner! You’ve earned it.

Now, if I were a Washington pundit, I’d launch into some boring speech about how both sides are equally to blame, and then I’d call it a day and we’d all meet at Katherine Graham’s house for cocktails. Which is weird because Katherine Graham is dead. But this is why you never see us booking George Will and Peggy Noonan on my show (besides the fact that they wouldn’t do it): Because the same old Washington pundits haven’t said anything interesting since disco. Also because the idea that the blame for our government’s dysfunction is equally shared by the parties just is a giant, steaming mound of horseshit and anyone who has paid attention to politics over the last 20 years knows it. Or as I like to call it, “The Rise of the Party of the Apes.”

In fact, recently Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein, two old wonks who have been in Washington as long as the Potomac, wrote a book called “It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism” in which they basically say, flat out, what I say every week: it’s the Republicans who are crazy. And they wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post to go along with the book called, “Let’s Just Say It: The Republicans Are the Problem.”

They write: “We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.” And they’re not saying Democrats are blameless and perfect. We all know there’s only been one perfect man in human history. And that’s David Beckham.

But it reminded me of something Barney Frank recently said: “…people have said to me, well, why can't you work things out with the Republicans, and my answer to my friends has been: Exactly on what issues do you think Michele Bachmann and I can compromise?” Basically Barney is saying, look, how do you expect me to work on the 2+2=4 bill when their side believes math is a liberal plot to turn your kid queer?

Take Dick Lugar. Who was always a staunch conservative, just not the modern-day insane variety. He was just throttled in the Republican Senate primary in Indiana by a Tea Party guy named Richard Mourdock. And after Mourdock won he said this about working with the other side: “I certainly think bipartisanship ought to consist of Democrats coming to the Republican point of view.” Which is sort of like saying to your girlfriend, “I think both our sexual needs will best be fulfilled by you blowing me.”

Or take Allen West. Seriously, take him to the padded cell and give him 20 CCs of the high test. Ornstein and Mann start off their Post op-ed by noting that recently Rep. Allen West said that there are “78 to 81” Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. And not one Republican said, “Allen, come on. You’re making us look dumb.” Not one of the Republican candidates for president said anything. Because in today’s Republican Party, that’s not even edgy anymore. They probably saw him later on and were like, “Word, Allen. Word.” Because that’s how they think black people talk.

Sanders is right. The only thing he could even debate with Bachmann is hypocrisy, and they wouldn't even agree on that. Earth v. The Pod People.

But math does make your kids into queers! Queer little multibillionaires, yes indeed, moving out & going straight to Hell they are. Yes yes. Math is Not Of This World.

The House, led by speaker Boehner, j has passed many bills including budgets because it is controlled by Republicans. The Senate, controlled by Dems had done nothing. Maher hopes his readers are dumb enough not to know the difference! By the way, real classy calling West an ape. No wonder the dems are the party of kkk.

Mr. Maher,

here is a suggestion: lock yourself in a room with Col. West, guarded by MPs, talk your trash to him personally (don't forget to tell him you think that because he is a Republican he is nothing more than an ape), and let the best man exit the room.

Oh, and make sure your health care premiums are current before you enter that room, as I fear you will need access to their services after your meeting with Col. West.

Unfortunately you will probably only be asked to shine Col. West's shoes, a job that you are not remotely qualified to do.

Bill, last Friday on your show David Frum said the problem is people don't trust the government anymore. Too bad no one said, "Yeah, Dave, and it started with your hero, Ronald Reagan, who said, 'government is not the solution, it's the problem.'"

My mom said it's always easy to tell the difference between a Democrat and a Republican. One will lend you a hand. The other will give you the finger.

This from a self admitted wanker.

Consider the train wreck of the European welfare state and our own unsustainably toxic finances. Then consider the fact that we have not done a thing to limit government, but rather expand its reach beyond imagination.

Or consider a president who has attempted to grab more power than any of his predecessors. If there were an R behind his name he would have been crucified.

Assassination without accountability is now official policy.

Scandal after scandal after scandal and all you have is name calling. Pathetic.

Go grab a copy of one of your mysogynistic men's mags and dash off to the dressing room for some quick relief....

The federal government does have a very critical mission: defense and security. It can also print currency, deliver the mail, and enter into treaties. It shouldn't do much else. Hurrah for a do-little Congress. Actually, Congress should get really busy for a while repealing everything in the New Deal and Great Society. Then it can settle down again.

Maher's the poster child for botched abortions.

ed waldo (Hart Williams) said...

"Maher's the poster child for botched abortions," elegantly and succinctly sums up and validates Mr. Maher's post.

The simple truth is that Republican trolls, feebs, boors and haters have no actual arguments, and rely entirely on fallacies, or, as in this case, vicious juvenile snark.

Haw haw. Way to nail 'em Jethro!

Just think: thirty years of failed policies, two bank meltdowns, the rise of insane hatred and irrational, absurdist policies as answers when selfsame have been tried and found utterly bankrupt ... all refuted (according to this gutless troll) by one infantile snark that wouldn't merit comment in a club setting.

I'd actually like to set a club in this yahoo's face, but I mean that metaphorically only -- since such an actual sentiment would cause HannityHoftLimbo to wet his/its pants and knot the panties of the Usual Suspects: Malkin, Krauthammer, Coulter et al, ad nauseum, ad infinitum. Amen.

Maher is one of the "desperate idiots for Obama" and not a very useful one. Frum should consider that one reason we don't trust government is that when they get exploited and lose our money, they cover it up and lie instead of prosecuting the villains, absolutely because they can be prosecuted themselves for their own misconduct. So we distrust obviously dishonest government. Where is the surprise in this? That the propaganda isn't working?

I love how conservatives somehow believe the corporate take over of government represents freedom.
BTW, I believe that it's always important to keep an eye on the government- both parties included. However, the republicans will just steer more resources into the hands of their already rich campaign donors and screw the average American.

Somehow, this will be perceived as "freedom." Like the freedom we have to be overcharged for health care so that HMO's executives can be wealthy or the freedom I have to pay for billions in oil subsidies for companies making billions in quarterly profits.

Good thinking, right wingers.

I find it amusing that supporters of "Col. West" don't: (1) refer to him as "Lt. Col. West" (that was his actual rank upon his departure from the US Army); and (2) do portray him as a "war hero tough guy" when, in fact, Lt. Col. West left active service after having accepted an Article 15 (non-judicial punishment in lieu of court-martial) for felony violations of military law--he admitted to violations of UCMJ articles 128 (assault) and 134 (general article) for his conduct in Iraq. Look it up: by definition, your man is an apparent war criminal.

(And by the way, I am also a retired military officer--a Lt. Col. with post 9-11 combat experience and JAG experience. Face it: Lt. Col. West was drummed out of the Army. Google it if you don't believe me.)

Now, I'm NOT suggesting Lt. Col. West isn't in good company by virtue of his membership in Congress. (Plenty of criminal types there.) But I AM suggesting that his supporters on this website remind one of slithering sycophants. Is West an "ape?" Nah, of course not. Is he a criminal? Well, the United States Army thought so--and by virtue of his decision to accept the Article 15, lt. Col. West thought so, too.

Cheers!

LOL, look at all these moronic GOP posts. Bill, I think you might have been mentioned on a conservative whack-jobs blog or Fox News, because they always send out their Brown Shirts to intimidate anyone that doesn't agree with them and this has all the symptoms.

I completely agree with you. I've been saying it for years. The GOP IS the problem. I think they like to use the Hitler reference because as always, the GOP attacks first on issues they are reeking of guilt. I hate to use a passe fascist reference, (see how they did that), though these guys have a striking resemblance to fascism.

Spending massive money on military and promote militarist agenda, check.
Give the banks and big businesses whatever they want including welfare, check.
Blame someone else for the problems, and center hate on them through any means, check.
Resist compromise as a show of weakness, check.
Actively talk about a one party system, check.
Intimidate, lie, cheat, in elections, check.
Limiting the rights of voters, check.

Now I'm not saying they are anywhere near being Nazis but they share a great deal with fascist ideals. I hate to think what they could do if the D-Baggers get control of the Presidency and the Senate. These guys are downright scary.

Just look at all the geniuses that posted here. They are trying to intimidate you and anyone that follows you because it's the only thing they know how to do: be bullies.

Wow. Michele Bachmann, Dick Lugar, Richard Mourdock all mentioned as well...but clearly this post is about Allen West being an "Ape"" b/c he was mentioned in the last paragraph? Please.

I know I should;t be doing this because it will open no eyes or serve any purpose, but for all the haters screaming "RACISM" against Marher (while simultaneously spewing & encouraging violent homophobic rhetoric): There was this movie that came out recently, called 'Rise of the Planet of The Apes'. It's that movie he is comparing the entire tea-party hijacked republican party to. You see it's a metaphor comparing the intelligence of those that believe that Democrats are communist; or those that believe in no compromise with democrats; or those those that believe invasive vaginal procedures should be mandatory while blaming Obama for taking away their "freedoms"; to. It's actually quite funny.

What's not funny is the first thing that comes to the minds of these hate mongers that are posting here (and sure to be on a 48 hour news cycle on fox news) is race. As if they are searching for justification for their behavior. It's that "False equivalency that Bill talks about a lot on his show and in his posts.

Forty-six million Americans (one in seven) are on food stamps.

One in seven is unemployed or underemployed.

The percentage of those out of work defined as long-term unemployed is the highest (42%) since the Great Depression.

54% of college graduates younger than 25 are unemployed or underemployed.

47% of Americans receive some form of government assistance.

Employment-to-population ratio for 25- to 54-year-olds is now 75.7%, lower than when the recession “ended” in June 2009.

There are 7.7 million fewer full-time workers now than before the recession, and 3.3 million more part-time workers.

Eight million people have left the labor force since the recession “ended” — adding those back in would put the unemployment rate at 12% instead of 8.2%.

The number of unemployed looking for work for at least 27 weeks jumped 310,000 in May, the sharpest increase in a year.

Over 7.5 million homes have been foreclosed upon by the Wall Street bankers since 2008.

The National Debt has increased by $5.7 trillion (57% increase) since September 2008, while real GDP has risen by $305 billion (2.3% increase) since the 3rd quarter of 2008.

Interest income paid to senior citizens and savers has declined by $400 billion (29% decline) since September of 2008 due to Ben Bernanke’s ZIRP.

Government transfer payments have risen by $500 billion (32% increase) since September 2008, while private industry wages have risen by $200 billion (4.7% increase).

The price of a gallon of gas has risen from $1.70 in December 2008 to $3.53 today.

Food prices have risen by 7% to 10% since late 2008, even using the falsified BLS data. A true assessment by anyone who actually goes to a grocery store (not Bernanke – his maid does the shopping) would be a 10% to 20% increase.

Even dogs get it.

Not counting benefits, 100,000 postal jobs costs us > $5 BILLION a year. The post office has never turned a profit. Even competing with this unprofitable, protected insider racket, private freight carriers turn a profit. Until recently UPS set the floor for rates in their sector with such integrity that as the shipper of first resort for domestic small businesses, they have functioned as a national deterrent against inflation. So, fuck the parasitic postal monopoly, formerly aka the Bank of Congress, a job the Guidos took over while driving all the small businesses out of business.

All State mandated fetters that tax the shit out of us for "our benefit" make it impossible for me to do in America the charity work I do in Africa. I would love to bring it home; can't do it.
Warn Charlie, before he gives a minute of time or a dime to a charity, find out who benefits. Remember the 2-3 BILLION donated by Americans to help Haiti after the earthquake? Have you been to Haiti lately?

And who says politics aren't polarized by the parties?

Really, it's *all* the fault of the GOPers?

Seems to me government, regardless of party, has been failing for many, many decades.

Until people begin to realize the problem *is* the government, nothing is ever going to change. Looking to that which caused the problem for the solution seems... well... stuck.

Learn to see the forest through the trees. And remember that truly good people have no victims.

It's rare to see anyone like maher. This full of hate and filth...bill, you're always wishing for this man and that woman to die. Trust, there are plenty of us out here marking the days to piss on your grave. You don't deserve to suck in the same air that gives life to good people.

Bill Just want to let you know....that I am An American Living in the UK.I totally get what you're saying as I can tell there is a huge sanity GAP between the Conservatives here - who primarily side with the Tory party and those in the GOP. I disagree with much of the UK conservatives' agenda but at least I want to hear what they have to say as their agruments, unlike the GOP are based on rationale thinking and not statements pulled out of their butts.

Why is that??..perhaps the GOP should hire political consultants from the UK.

Bill Mayer wouldn't make a pimple on Allen West ass. Bill Mayer is scared to take on Allen West in person. Allen West would chew him up and spit him out in a heart beat !!! So like all these stupid news media people, he spews his slander from behind his desk.. There are a lot of Allen West fans out there and I am one of them. So Bill Mayer you the others can kiss my ass !!!!!!

I think it's too late. The most corrupt businessmen have bribed the cheapest politicians (most neo-GOP fools), and the game is broken.

There is a tiny hope for democracy in America. President Obama must turn his back on Romney and go after the worst of the lunatics, starting with Allen West. He needs to make that lunatic a national issue and he needs to flip his district.

Rove will have to pump money in--but on a district level it is relatively visible. Romney will have to jump in to defend against Obama. Fools like West and Steve King and others are just indefensible black holes.

However, I think Obama should mostly stay out of the details of the local issues and just focus on a Constitutional Amendment to break Citizens United.

I think it's too late for America to recover, but a narrow victory by President Obama is worthless. The obstructionist neo-GOP Congress needs to be CRUSHED.

Small hope, but Obama should turn his back on Romney and go after Allen West, Michelle Bachmann, and some of the other lunatics. Force the neo-GOP to pour their black money into the worst holes and drag Romney to their defense.

BOTH OF YOU ARE THE BIGGIST JACKASSES AROUND...BUT, WHAT THE HELL?? YOU'RE JUST THE TWO THAT BRAYS THE LOUDEST!! COME THIS FALL, WITH LOTS OF HARD WORK & SOME LUCK TO GO WITH IT, WE REPUBLICANS ARE GOING TO PUT YOUR SORRY ASSES "OUT TO PASTURE" FOR A WHILE...AND, CLEAN UP THE MESS YOU LEFT BEHIND!!

shanen said...

Screaming in upper case does not give any weight to your ideas.

By the way, it would be much easier to clean up the mess Dubya left behind if the neo-GOP politicians and their moronic supporters were actually as concerned about the good of the nation as they are concerned with pandering to their personal deficiencies.

Hey Bill, Here's a thought. .more than losing the election, what would be Mitt's greatest fear? Losing the LDS church! Can that be why he's not revealing his tax forms? Consider that he is hiding the information from the church. LDS requires a tithe of 10% of gross income. .bet they'd like to see the returns too !!

I find it difficult to vote for either candidate, when both have failed to understand their role and position as servant to the people. Both talk of change, but neither have the courage to truly be a voice that represents the people. Most Americans are waiting and desperately hoping to have a leader that stands above the influence of a few; a few that exert their power, to silence the voice of many through fear and various forms of influence. This type of corruption shatters the constitutional foundation of our government and country; laying to waste the true patriotic spirit of our citizens. Our citizens weigh light on the scale of truth and justice to the heavy weight of the hidden faceless entities of power that has become too powerful.

Neither candidate is willing to risk everything, to be a leader of truth, but rather fade into weak positions of vague thought. They debate and debase one another in areas so distant from the pain and hemorrhaging of most Americans. The cry of the citizens to be heard is deafened by the empty rhetoric they throw at one another and We the People.

Both candidates are so full of fear and confusion that they are unwilling and perhaps, quite sadly, unable to come to a place of leadership that embodies this phrase, "Of the people. By the people. For the people." Their actions have decimated this phrase.

They send letters to me; calling me friend. I say be careful when you call someone a friend. A friend is someone you listen to. And friends can learn from on another. How can you be my friend? You do not hear me. You do not learn from me.

I don't want to hear a candidate say, "Money is what wins elections." Because if that is true, then who really wins when a candidate gets elected? Answer: Those with money....

I doubt this will even be allowed to be shown to either can as their advisors, will not allow them to be misguided by the words of a simple citizen.

If any president wants to win an election, they should be very clear, as to their intentions. And if those intentions deviate from the representation, of the voting citizens, as a whole, then they diminish their commitment to their position; leaving truth and justice shattered upon the foundation built by our great forefathers.

For those of you still in a cloud of ignorance. Here are some obvious points.

1) This is NOT a free country.
2) Our government expresses opposition to human rights. Especially, where it concerns large business transactions in other countries; ie weapons sales.
3) One person, or one administration can not destroy a country. However, extensive corruption within a government can destroy your constitution and rights.
4) People are NOT apathetic, but rather feel helpless and afraid to speak out.
How can WE the PEOPLE really fight against the sleeping arrangements made between such corrupt creatures such as the FDA and Pharmas.
5)WE the PEOPLE no longer own the rights to be represented by the government. That has been stolen and given away.
6)Our governmental and economic systems are broken.
7)Leaders in congress, choose not to lead.
8)A strong leader in congress is considered be in in a position of weakness.
9)Political leaders have replaced integrity with whoredom.
10)And the last point. It is not a Republican or Democratic problem. It is quite simply a money problem. Our government is quickly being purchased by a small number of faceless entities of power; a power that will NEVER allow balance and freedom the right to live.

WE ARE NOT LOOKING AT THE BIG PICTURE! THOSE FEW WANT US TO ARGUE BACK AND FORTH VIA OUR POLITICAL PARTIES. If you divide, you conquer. If you unite, things might change. But maybe that is too late. Currently, in our country, "Truth will not set you free", but rather give the government the rope to hang you as a terrorist. Being a truthful patriot can be quite dangerous now. Especially when our government insists on contradicting the Constitution. The unrestrained monster attacks at night, knowing full well that the light of day would expose its wrong doings to the masses. The intelligence of the unrestrained monster, reveals small wrongdoings, to distract the masses, from the larger wrongdoings. This is a basic tactic of warfare. Similar ideas expressed in the Chinese writings, 'The Art of War'.

Bill, did you happen to hear Paul Ryan's 'defence' of Akin rape comment on NPR? He said, "Rape, there's no splitting hair on this issue, Rape is..." Really? I'm paraphrasing here, but I'm sure your staff can have some fun with this one, so get the quote exact. Is he implying that rape is okay if there is no hair to split? And what does that imply? Again is this camp flip-flopping or just having it their hair-brained way?

Anyway, since then I'll add to my comment that I've realized that it really is both sides to blame: both side of the neo-GOP.

One neo-GOP side is extremely rich, greedy, and corrupt businessmen who are only focused on making more money. Small government? Not if it would cut into their profits. They WANT big customers, but even better if the big customer is too dysfunctional to do anything about swindles.

The other neo-GOP side consists of fanatics, who would be pretty much harmless without the money from the first side. The key is that it's cheap to bribe fanatics and you just pick the ones that seem useful--until they go out of control like Frankenstein's monster. At this point, many of the neo-GOP fanatics are bound and determined to 'Destroy the government in order to save it!'
