Hey, it's been a long time. Almost 20 years. Do you remember what you learned 20 years ago? I was confusing distance measuring with interferometer measuring. I remember viewing the sun through a telescope when I was about 10 at The Franklin Institute, but I don't remember any specific details. I witnessed atoms being split in a Cyclotron at Princeton University, but I can't remember the results. I also witnessed a laser being bounced off the moon, but I can't remember the exact distance, and excuse me, but I was mistaken on the order of accuracy. I'll be more careful in the future. But my point still stands. We were on the moon. I'm surprised you didn't challenge that ridiculous statement, Zen.
And it is all in the timing, and based on the speed of light. And I didn't mean to imply I was on "a team". The professor and his technicians conducted the experiment. I was an undergraduate college student, and just an observer with all my other classmates. We took notes, and made calculations. It was more of a demonstration. Nothing too spectacular. Just a quick flash, and a computer readout.

First reason was that when I questioned your knowledge of physics before, you defended yourself in a way that attempted to make me appear to be the one who was the idiot.
Secondly, to say that you took part in an experiment to determine the distance to the Moon, with an accuracy of a few microns, shows that you don't have the knowledge of physics a bright Jr. High kid would have.
Then when I gave you a chance to back down from your statement, you decided to further dazzle us with your superior knowledge!
So, when it comes to a debate as to whether or not we went to the Moon...
...you're on the losing side. The opposing side's argument is that those who said we went to the Moon lied. Now, you just bolstered their argument.

I guess I was being a little cocky and got my facts backwards. But thanks for bringing me "back to Earth". And it was just a stupid mistake. I really was part of that, or excuse me, an observer of that.
I can't imagine the clock required to break down the distance light travels in a few millimeters much less a few microns.
Then when you get into the expansion of the Earth, the effect of the atmosphere on the speed of light, and other factors I don't even know about, it seems like an impossible task.

Actually digital time circuits are extremely accurate. Some of those Physics labs had old Apple IIe computers, and even by today's standards, their digital time circuits are very accurate. And laser Q-switches (I looked this up, just now) have rise times from .5 to 2 nanoseconds. And that was from a book from 1979. I'm sure they are much faster than that, now. And the speed of light in air, and the speed of light in a vacuum are very close. 1.003:1. And water is 1.31:1. Only in an instrument as powerful as The Hubble telescope, can it make a noticeable difference. Remember that? That's how the engineers of Hubble fucked up originally. They designed optics for use in air, rather than in free space. It was OK for the closer objects in outer space, but was very blurry, and couldn't be focused on very distant objects. So, even highly trained and highly paid scientists, with many others watching and checking, fuck up occasionally. But see, one little mistake like that, and everybody thinks you're lying, or full of shit. (Somebody really should have caught that one.) Or one faulty O-ring, and no one thinks the shuttle will fly again. Well, now it really won't, anymore.
And another thing I just caught myself on. I said the speed of light was 3.8*10(8)m/s. It's 3.0*10(8)m/s. Gravity is 9.8 m/s(2). See how I confused the two with the .8? I said it's been a long time! Hey, I had an electrical engineering professor that said those large trash can shaped objects on telephone poles were large capacitors. They are actually transformers.

I have no use for school although I leaned math there.. I do great with algebra. And through algebra no formula is left unsolvable. I do math for fun in fact, puzzles relax me. but I still would rather paint boxes , do needle work, and art work. So knowing math has nothing to do with it.
By the way I had nothing better to do in the 80's so while I was raising my son, I went to college as an adult. Graduated Business And Accounting course with honors.
Now I know income tax laws, accounting principles and business back wards and forwards.
I pay no taxes, I don't need a luxury home or car.. I like my simple life.

How about standard deviations? Having suffered though algebra in high school, it made it easier to learn in Business school, didn't it? Hey, I don't want to keep you from life's little pleasures. But it was suggested that children shouldn't be made to learn math, that their time would be better spent searching for a spiritually uplifting profession, like basket weaving. But no child should be deprived of being taught math and science, because a child's true calling, or professional desire may not be apparent until college. It certainly can't possibly be determined by standardized testing. And if I wasn't so tired, i bet I could find many ways, your needle point and box painting can be related to science, and maybe even math. Goethe's color theory?

Back from ball......I never said it was a mistake to teach basic math. I asked if it was necessary to teach ALL things to ALL kids. Basic math, as well as knowing how to read is something I would advocate for every human. Not just kids. We are trying to be all things to all people. That isn't possible. Using an AppleIIe to measure the speed of light, I'm guessing you might be able to get an accurate resolution of maybe 5 or 10 miles.

I was merely trying to say that's it may eventually be possible to measure within millimeters or microns. And I never said we used the Apples for measuring the speed of light. You don't "measure" the speed of light. You measure the time it takes for a pulse of light to travel to the moon and back. The speed of light is a constant (for all intents and purposes). The shorter the pulse of light from the laser, the more accurate the reading. It's like measuring the distance of a lightning strike. Using the time it takes to see the lightning, and hear the lightning, and using the speed of sound as a constant. If it takes 5 seconds to hear the sound from the time you see the light, and you know sound travels at about 331m/s, it's very easy to calculate distance. That's 1,655 meters., or 1.655 km. Same principle only using light instead of sound. Now, working backwards, using the distance as a constant, and the speed of light as a constant, about how long should it take for a pulse of light to travel to the moon and back (roughly)?

If you want to talk about all of the influence special interest groups have on textbooks and curriculum, that's legitimate. But that shouldn't be used as an excuse to stop teaching math and science and the arts and all the other things that may seem useless in everyday life. A nuclear physicist can learn basket weaving. But a basket weaver can't learn nuclear physics without a proper background. Unfortunately, the older one gets, the harder it can be to learn (can't teach an old dog...) An artist or a poet can't be an artist or a poet, without learning about art and poetry and being able to appreciate the beauty, not to mention the role art and literature, and science and math play on a young person's ability to think. So, it's not necessarily learning these things in particular, it's learning how to think and reason logically. The biggest problem I have with the education system is, that it seems as soon as a young person enters high school, all of that nurturing of the young imagination is crushed, and students are forced to "conform or be cast out". Ever see The Breakfast Club?

Watch out for each other. The American status quo loves to share misery and will stoop to anything to stop you from being any better than they are. Its part of their insanity.

Yes.. I was very bored in Math Class in school. I would have been better off learning on my own. The minute I learned the T account in college which was the fist week, I was ahead of the class. mostly I didn't go to class in college just brought the work and book home. didn't study. and when I did go to the college I spent more time tutoring other students in the cafeteria than attending class.
I know I learned more outside of school than I ever did in a class room.
you have no idea what liability going to school can be. In school you are taught to think like others. Not how well you think for yourself.
By the way I entered college with a grade 10 education, I was old enough to quit then. the course started with over 30 students. there were only six of us left the last term. The only one who had grades as high as mine was a young woman just out of high school who studied very hard. Yet to me there was nothing easier, Before this class I attended a millwright course did well enough in it. Two thirds of the way trough it a car accident prevented me from finishing. Took business the year after because it was easier on my damaged body.
Life experience is worth much than book learning. I graduated over 15 years ago. In the end the education was just a foundation, putting things into practice and learning better ways of doing things despite what I was taught is far more advatageous than what the books had to say.

Portable and lab atomic clocks were also available at the time.

They do them at the hospital three days everyweek, two patients. In fact they do it in multiple hospitals; it is considered routine, it is considered viable, helpful therapy. It is used to cure depression (if it works, why do they have to keep doing it weekly or bi-weekly or tri-weekly),for each patient). The only thing they have stopped doing from the 1950's is lobotomies. I think we all agree, the pharmacutical companies are making a killing off of the mentally ill. I honestly believe there is another answer. These people would be better off living in tribes. These people were not made for the insanity the rest of us have gotten use to. The mentally ill are probably normal, but the world that they find themselves living in, is not where they want to live. a question i wish i received far more often - it shows care. frank cares about enriching life - like a piece of uranium - enrich it until it explodes with revelation, and revolution.
am i enriching my life, spending hours looking at pictures and video of that day? i'm satisfying my curiosity, which was piqued again after i had set the case at rest. and satisfying my curiosity eases my mind, brings me peace - whether or not my conclusion is true, coming to a conclusion is more important for peace of mind. i cannot be comfortable with too many warring contradictions floating about in my head.
but, unlike many people on this blog, i have the innate ability to hold two contrasting thoughts in my mind at once and not self-implode.
as a philosopher, i regularly second-guess my assumptions, my basic foundations of belief and reality, and my main interest being metaphysics, i often question reality to a point most of you probably don't tread on too often.
does this enrich my life to question these things, to not let something like 9/11, like the existence of god, like the objective/subjective debate; to not let these things rest? to brush the dust from the tops of their static state and reinvestigate my most basic beliefs?

Its clearly irrational to blame Bill Maher for the public spotlight on the Palin kids but the question, if they are legitimate targets for media is a fair question.
In light of the hereditary nature of political seats in the USA & especially after what has happened in the world during George Jr.'s watch, with so much help from his friends, I would consider them fair game - when they are adults.
This thing about Palin's kids is mostly due to her involving her kids in her campaign to present her image. She brought them into it; it was her choice. Its her responsibility.

It is conditional.
You can't just *go* to heaven, you have to pray for your original sin to go away first, and worship god on certain days (etc etc...)
this is true of other religions as well. in fact, anything that places conditions on us (you must be white to go here, you must be male to do this, etc) are what we instinctively butt our heads against - why should YOU, LAURA, be surprised that people reject xianity when it rejects certain parts of them?

the values behind religion are not necessarily wrong, but there are so many restrictions and abuses of power from these conditionals, in fact, we often shy away from new religious ideas for this very reason.
but, unfortunately, our group-think instinct and our inherent fear of being alone keeps us attached to operating systems of the brain, like cultural and religious trends that make no sense or hurt others...
