Party Foul

By Bill Maher

I don't spend a lot of time worrying about what's philosophically wrong with Republicans. It's like asking what's intellectually wrong with lobsters. But Jon Huntsman (who's what you'd get if Mitt Romney had a baby with Anderson Cooper) said something interesting while we were off, in England's Daily Telegraph:

"The party right now is a holding company that's devoid of a soul and it will be filled up with ideas over time and leaders will take their proper place. We can't be known as a party that's fear-based and doesn't believe in math. In the end it will come down to a party that believes in opportunity for all our people, economic competitiveness and a strong dose of libertarianism."

Huntsman once told the Huffington Post that Republicans seem to want to:

"... thwart the opposition, stymie the opposition, obfuscate, be a flamethrower, go out there and destroy the system, and here we are."

You put those couple of thoughts together, and I think that's a pretty good description of the GOP position on the debt ceiling. Destroy the System/Don't Do Math. It's not a political party. It's Rock 'n' Roll High School.

Speaking of exactly the same thing (plus racism), Colin Powell was on Meet the Press Sunday, to borrow David Gregory's gun clip, and say the GOP has its head up its ass.

Powell: "There's also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities."

No shit, General Sherlock. Now, I don't know why Colin Powell is a Republican any more than I understand why Andrew Sullivan says he's a Catholic. But Powell says he's a Republican, and he says they've got a secret problem, and he's the guy who said Iraq had nukes, so he knows things and we should listen to him.

GOP doesn't know what they want other than to s**t on everyone... like birds on a powerline making a bunch of incoherent noise to get attention and dropping bombs on ideas but without any of thier own...just the same old Ayn Rand anthem.
And one comment on S.E. Cupp screaming loudly on Real Time even though she was dead wrong...I dont agree with use of force all the time but The Presdient did not break the law on Lybia..he didn't invade and NATO took over before the 60 day deadline he is permitted. Conservatives just need to drop it...thier guy W. flat out lied and 4000+ Americans died for a publicly funded private contractor giveaway.

Dear Mr. Maher, I am writing an article about digital piracy for Patch.com (a division of Huffington Post.) I believe digital piracy is wrong, harmful, and financially destructive to artists and performers, however, I am having a hard time finding anyone who agrees with my viewpoint. In fact, my opinion on this topic makes me a pariah among my friends (because they all steal movies and music, and don't care who it hurts.) I know you have spoken out about digital piracy in the past, and was wondering if you would be willing to provide a quote on this topic that I could use for my article. Of course, a full interview would be fantastic but I realize you probably receive thousands of requests like this. I just thought I would give it a try since I am finding it really challenging to find anyone willing to speak out against piracy. I also sent you a message on Twitter. If you're willing to provide a quote or an interview, please let me know how I could send you my contact info. Thanks so much for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Rebecca Savastio

The elephant in the room is the Gawd-awful ballooning government deficit; it is a mortgage on the future and dealing with it seems to be a firm kick-of-the-can cliche down the road. Bush trashed the US ecomomy instead of implementing a VAT to pay for the wars; the patriotic thing to do. Obama is stuck with the mess, and Medicare and Social Security that can't be touched. Any chartered accountant can see the writing on the wall; a Greece-style future beholden to China (humiliating indeed). The Republicans' solution is tax breaks for the filthy rich and put the screws to the poor; they fiddle while Rome burns. Simpson-Bowles had the prescription for a cure but no one wants to take the bitter medicine. Social reforms go out the window fast when the cupboard is bare.

why aren't these people who cry about there guns and roe v. wade, etc. who say give the power back to the states, not stand up for the medical marijuana dispenceries, that WERE voted on by those states, especially in california were everyday it seems like I read about more being invaded by the feds,I guess there god doesn't like pot, so it's ok, oh yeah he made so they say, just another over looked hypocracy, I'm in SC(yuk)it doesn't effect me, yet.....maybe if they put a sign saying "abortion clinic" they'd have an armed force hang"n outside the building, so that when the feds come they can have a shoot out with each other.......I can see the headline..."Today the feds open fire on a group of armed pot heads with guns and bombs, masquradeing as anti-abortionist out side a local medical dispencery"....

off topic but regarding your comments about disability on the 01-25-2013 show:
I consider you a fairly bright guy (PETA notwithstanding) but I'm surprised with your lack of insight re:disability. As availability of health insurance (and health care) has gone down, disability claims have gone up.
It's really simple: sick people without proper care don't get better, they get worse.
The correlation is undeniable. You'll see the same trend in the US infant mortality rate.
People haven't gotten lazier, they just cant get the care we care we got twenty years ago.

If Iran really did send a monkey into space...if say the rocket exploded and said monkey died, would there be 75 male and female virgin monkeys waiting for him in Islamic Monkey Paradise?
