Americans, please wash hands before criticizing Obama

Friday, May 8th 2009

New Rule: Now that we've answered his call to wash our hands, President Obama must continue to tell us how to live. Last week, when America was faced with the pan-global swine flu omega death plague, the President went on TV and told people to wash their hands, and experts tell us this made a big difference, which augurs well for next month's "National Wipe Your Butt Day." Next week, in a fireside chat, he'll tell us not to put a fork in the toaster.

It's sad that the leader of the free world had to call a live press conference to tell his nation of clueless nitwits that employees must wash hands before returning to work. If that's not the "Forrest Gump-ification" of America, I don't know what is. Feeling wet, America? Why not try new, "Coming in from the Rain"?

You may think I'm blowing this out of proportion, but this plea from Obama - you know, the "Audacity of Soap" - was the first specific thing a President has asked the American people to actually do in decades. Unless you count "go shopping." Hopefully it will open the door to other, slightly weightier suggestions from the President.

So please, Mr. President, tell us to turn the lights off when we leave the room. Tell us not to buy crap we don't need and can't afford. Tell us to lay off the Ring Dings and Cheese Nips, and think twice before dating a stranger we meet on craigslist. For God's sake, tell people to read a newspaper. Not just to save the newspaper industry - though Lord knows I'd miss my Daily Jumble - but because having a public that actually knows something is our best defense against ever again electing a President who knows nothing.

There's a name for people who do the right thing for their country, even if it involves sacrifice. And no, it's not "socialists." It's "patriots." We all know the modern definition of a patriot: It's the person who pays the least taxes and listens to the most A.M. radio. But that wasn't what it always meant.

Patriots want their fellow citizens to be able to go to the hospital. They want to make sure no one sells them bread made out of Chinese skulls. They want a country where the deer and the antelope can still play - and not just so Sarah Palin can shoot them from a helicopter. Patriots want to burn less coal and buy less oil. Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House roof and Ronald Reagan had them removed. You've heard of "opposite marriage"? This is "opposite patriotism."

Rush Limbaugh celebrated this Earth Day by praising coal-fired power plants and the plastic bag, while Glenn Beck cheered a man on while he cut down trees.

During the campaign, Obama suggested that one simple thing Americans could do to help with fuel-efficiency was check their car's tire pressure. And Republicans freaked, because to them, every suggestion for the common good is a direct attack on their personal liberty, and it's unpatriotic to interfere with anyone's God-given right to be big, dumb and selfish.

When the President suggests things that will help the greater good, that's not a slight against your fragile manhood. I know, you're a rugged individualist. But you're not - you're just a schmuck.

Going back to Reagan, all of our leaders have predictably and reliably told us that government is always the problem, never you my precious, perfect American citizen. You are always perfect just the way you are, like a precious little snowflake. A beautiful, precious, 350-pound, pig-ignorant snowflake.

-Bill Maher

I think it's great that we have a president who is able to talk down to the dumbest of us, without making us feel like Republicans...

This could start a new trend, and eliminate 92% of the Republican voting base, if Obama can just turn the dumb fucks, and make them see the light.

Now, if our president tells us to *NOT* go to work, when we're plump, walking virus's ready to explode, spreading infecting to everyone in the building, tell me this won't appeal to idiots.

Granted, it will be directed at anal douche bags who have to go to work in contagious states, just to show everyone what brave little soldiers they are, and to give them a preview of their next two miserable weeks, at home in bed WHERE THEY FUCKING BELONG!

But anyway, the message will have great mass appeal to people, who probably don't have a job anyway. No harm, no foul!

Once he's comfortable in office, maybe Obabm can start telling us what it's *OK* to do!

Like it's fine for kids to play outside after dark.

Yeah, I know, one or two of 'em might get snatched off the street, but that's life. We can't live in fear, and what, the chances of getting snatched by a stranger are something like 10,000,000 to 0.1

I like those odds. Besides, if the kids don't go outside and play, a lot more of 'em will die from heart failure, than from getting raped to death.

***brought to you by kiddie rapers for Obama***...sorry couldn't resist

In response to the original post:
Hand washing:
"In the Marines they teach you not to piss on your hands."
Good advice. If you don't piss all over yourself, you don't have to worry about cleaning it up, or something like that.

"Audacity of Soap" - was the first specific thing a President has asked the American people to actually do in decades.
You're forgetting that President Bush told us to "keep spending money" after the 9/11 attacks. Some Americans seem to be under the impression that the government has no business telling them that they are going to have to sacrifice a little, for the good of the country. It's unAmerican; It sounds too much like FDR.

But Americans used to take pride in the sacrifices they made for the good of the country. Look at all the sacrifices Americans made during the Depression and WWII. Were they all for naught? Are we so big now, that we shouldn't have to make sacrifices anymore? People are squandering the sacrifices made by their parents and grandparents so they could have a better life.

There's an oxymoron that seems to be plaguing the Republican Party and The Heritage Foundation. They talk about passing on government debt to future generations by spending too much money. But what they neglect is the future energy crisis and healthcare meltdown.

I would love to expound on this, but I'm cooking for Mother's Day. I'm doing gourmet Italian - Gnocchi in an asparagus vodka sauce. Asparagus is in season here.

Take time to reflect on the sacrifices your Mother and Grandmother made so you could have a better life - even if they're not with us anymore.

Hey Bill, I enjoyed your last two shows far more than I have in a long time. I agree that the citizens are too often coddled and need to be slapped in shape once in a while. I am deeply upset that Obama is not doing his part by protecting our borders from third-worlders who bring these disease in and not just swine flu, but TB and the like. Tuberculosis is becoming more of an issue strictly because of illegal immigration. Legal immigrants are made to undergo tests to see if they have such deadly illnesses. Not illegals. Swine flu is just the tip of the iceberg. The single thing that Obama could do to win over conservatives who don't hate him no matter what is protect our border. That one act would win over countless conservatives who felt like the Republicans were no better than the Democrats concerning this issue. If he protected our borders, he would have far more political capital to enact his Green industrial revolution and other noble causes. Environmentalists should be willing to sacrifice their socialist desire to defend illegals and worry about the environment first. I know that Obama ending illegal immigration and benefits for illegals would take all the wind out of the intense opposition he's facing. That is a fact. Many conservatives would love him for this single stance. It is such a thorn in our sides. Even those that aren't environmentalist such as me would find it hard to dislike him, because they would feel so relieved that someone's finally protecting our borders.

Even if I were Bill Maher in incognito, I wouldn't dream of deleting you're posts. I enjoy having the opportunity to directly address some of the misinformation being spread by powerful groups such as The Heritage Foundation, through right wing media like The Canada Free Press.
Do I hate? Having an opposing opinion is one thing. But when it comes to self-serving/special interest serving organizations and individuals, that fabricate, omit and spin the facts, in an attempt to affect public policy - yeah, I hate.

Example:
...while he dismantles our defenses!
I suppose you're referring to the new defense spending proposals. Sure, much of the media is reporting that he is cutting defense spending. But what the DOD is really trying to do is transition from antiquated WWII, conventional type warfare, to an insurgency type warfare. Stealth fighters and bombers are practically useless against insurgents. What is effective, is the unmanned Predator aircraft. So, we're cutting on Stealth and increasing on Predator.
The DOD is also implementing an entirely new procurement system which will save money by eliminating many of the "no bid" contracts which allows contractors to charge $20,000 for a toilet seat.
This is pissing off many defense contractors. So, these defense contractors go to organizations, like The Heritage Foundation, and contract them to spread rumors and misinformation in an attempt sway public opinion and to derail the new policy. And people like Dick Cheney go on shows like Face The Nation, and say we're "less safe".

I can agree with you're position on illegal immigration, but not so much with you're assessment. You practically refer to them as being disease carrying rodents. They are also referred to, by some, as drug/gun smuggling criminals. This may be true for a small number, but certainly not the majority. However, the number (percentage) is increasing. It is the ones that facilitate illegal immigration, on the other side of the fence, that are the criminals - Human trafficking, it's not just for Chinese massage parlors anymore. But I digress.

Environmentalists should be willing to sacrifice their socialist desire to defend illegals

Environmentalism has evolved far beyond The Green Party and Socialism. It's not environmentalists that are fueling this fight for illegals on the left side of the aisle. It's simply the fact that most Hispanics vote Democratic, with the exception of some Cuban Americans. I think what moderate Democrats want to do is change the legal immigration process, making it unnecessary for Mexicans to pay $2,500 (or whatever it is now) to a human trafficker, to be allowed to go through the tunnel or over the fence and enter this country illegally. Democrats want them here, legally, so they can vote.

Now, on the other side of the aisle. I can directly address this issue, having worked and presently own a business in the construction industry for 30 years. I know exactly what Republican business owners in construction want and don't want. What do these businesses want? More work. How do they get more work? By out bidding the competition. How do they out bid the competition and still make money? Cut costs. How do they cut costs without sacrificing quality? Pay their employees less and avoid paying payroll taxes. How do they maintain a workforce and not get in trouble with the IRS? Hire illegal immigrants who will work for less and list them on the books as independent contractors, and give them a 1099 at the end of the year. Legal immigrants, who have real social security and bank accounts, must pay taxes on the amount of the 1099. They have to pay taxes because there were none withheld on the payroll. Illegals, just don't file. Still with me?

Now, let me put some numbers behind this. People who have worked in the industry know, that $15/hr on payroll and $15/hr as a subcontractor are not the same when it comes to taxes. It's not the same for the employer either. An employer that pays a worker $15/hr will cost the employer about $20-22/hr. Whereas, if the employer pays him as a sub, 15 means 15. The extra taxes get passed on to the employee. Unless of course the employee has many expenses which can be "written off". In that case the employee itemizes deductions rather than taking the standard deduction. So, enough of the accounting lesson. What's the bottom line? With a large illegal work force, about $20,000 can be shaved off a $250,000 home, just on labor.

This is the real reason why illegals are allowed in this country, and it's not limited to the construction industry, by any means. It's not the Socialists, it's The Chamber of Commerce and big business.

But I fear the real reason that regular Americans are against illegal immigration is that they don't like driving down Main St. and seeing a "bunch of greasy Mexicans" standing on the corner, looking like they're up to no good.

Illegal immigrants are paid too little by their employers who thus pass the buck of their cost of living onto the taxpayer. The taxpayer bears the burden of illegals' excessive birth rate in our emergency rooms. The taxpayers pay the burden of imprisoning the criminals, not just over drugs which I'm for legalizing, but the violent and sex offenders. We pay to put them in our schools and give them food stamps. The taxpayer needs to wake up and be willing to pay more for our fruit and houses and the like, for we're already paying through the nose for it via the indirect route of taxation. If the employers pay their employees more, native-born U.S. citizens will take those jobs. Native-borns don't have the excessive birth rate and thus would actually have a lower cost of living altogether. We pay a little more for our fruit and houses, but far less in taxes and we'll altogether be paying less and hiring our people, who need the work but aren't as prone to seeing welfare as a valid means of survival. We need to stop being afraid of saying we want to protect our own. The Mexicans are proud of their race and culture and protect it well in their country and their communities here. We need to take a cue from them.

John Demjanjuk, is getting fucked again, this time by Germany & the U.S. of A.

"He was once accused by the United States and Israel of being a notoriously brutal S.S. guard at the Treblinka camp known as "Ivan the Terrible." After appeals, that allegation was eventually dropped by both countries, but later other allegations were made against him."...

This quote from CNN fails to mention that the witnessed in Israel all LIED to get a conviction. Demjanjuk was then sentenced to DEATH, awaiting his execution, when Russia, presented documentation proving the old man's innocence.

So, if Russia wouldn't have stepped forward Israel would have murdered ANOTHER innocent person!

Now it's Germany's turn to have a crack at killin' him.

Why didn't they bring him to trial, a decade or three ago, if this guy was such a monster?

Dude, Zengrouch, just because we happen to agree on a few things doesn't mean we're anything alike. Anyone whose read the other blog will know that if we met we'd probably get in a fight. So, don't cater to undiscerning fools. I happen to be an environmentalist and a vegetarian, does that mean all environmentalists and vegetarians are against illegal immigration and affirmative action? Absolutely not. I happen to believe the Earth is billions of years old. Does that mean all who concur also are white pride like me? No. So, let it be known that Zengrouch hates most of what I say and I hate most of what he says. On that note, just as you would find it foolish and upsetting for someone to call you an Anti-Semite, so to do I not consider myself a Nazi. Yes, I'm white pride, but I would never harm anyone. I would never kill anyone unless my loved ones or I were in eminent mortal danger. One can be proud of their race without wanting to harm others. Believe it or not, my best friends are Jewish, and they know in general where I stand on politics, but they also know I love 'em as my homeboys and got their back no matter what. As I said, I voted for Obama, so I certainly know how to judge a person by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. I am not a Nazi, because when you say that word it implies I'm a murderous thug. I wouldn't harm an animal, let alone a human. But, go on believing I'm a Nazi, just as others will think you're anti-semitic because you dare dis on Israel and tell the truth about Demjanjuk.

You have shown yourself to be a White Supremacist, stating that genetically whites got more going on, than other races.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but you've given me the impression that you also feel that these inferior races have achieved positions in our society, they do not deserve, have not earned, and should be removed from.

Sorry, but this is close enough to the Nazi philosophy for me to put you into that category, even if you don't have photos of Hitler hanging on your wall sandwiched in between a pair of grand swastikas.

Not all Nazis were in on the 'final solution' however, their beliefs that are very close to yours, allowed the murders to take place.

However, I have no proof that you are an actual Nazi, so in the future, I'll not refer to you as one unless given reason to do so.

You my friends practice what media students call fragmentation: you listen and speak with only the people to whom your naive philosophies cater, and everything else that disagrees with that has many ready answers, waiting on some Google search result page 1.

So, instead of doing the same thing you do every night (bicker on blogposts being one of them,) please take a moment to learn something new:

Krishnamurti and David Bohm on the Future of Humanity:

You've said nothing of substance, other than to cast me in a light I disagree with, and spew the standard, "Me no like Obama, him a false god!"

Would you care to comment on some of the points I've brought up in this blog?

You've also brought up the media. Have you ever checked out any reputable fact checking web sites, when it comes to the promises Obama made, and the one's he's kept?

And what exactly do you expect? Do you feel that he should have kept all of his political promises in the first 100 days?

It would seem so, judging from your disgruntled stance.

Now, is that an expectation that is based in reality, stupidity, or sheer hatred?

You come off like an idiot AND a phony.

Now... when a Republican preaches to the choir, as you have accused me of doing, this tactic is quite effective!

And if you can't even give a brief synopsis of your video links, don't expect me to waste my time on what will inevitably turn out to be right wing-nut idiotic propaganda and lies.

And once again, what exactly has anyone here "blocked?"

And how are your comments I previously quoted, not hypocritical on several levels?

Love the picture of Hunter S. My uncle just went to The Kentucky Derby, so I sent him a copy of The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved. He said it wasn't that bad.

It must be nice to be young, idealistic and in college. Sure, I would love to be able to drop everything and go write a thesis on Krishnamurti, Sangharakshita, Sri Chinmoy, Osho, or Alan Watts, or even Tom Robbins, for that matter. I'd like to be able to take the time and go out and visit Sasha Shulgin and see what he's been "cooking up".

But us middle aged fucks don't have that luxury. Read a newspaper? Are you kidding? Maybe I'll have time to listen to NPR while I'm at work. Newspapers are becoming antiquated, anyway. The only one that actually does any real investigative journalism anymore is Knight Ridder.

Sick of Obama already, huh? Well, he, like many of us, live in the real world. We can't just wave a magic wand and make everything better, instantly. Is he a corporate pawn? I suspect he is tied to GE the way W was tied to Exxon/Mobile. But at least he has a brain in his head, and can think for himself. Surely, somewhere in your "philosophical journeys" you've come across the idiom that "change comes from within". Pulling troops out of Iraq? i think he's set the timetable for that, which was pretty close to what he said during the campaign. Of course, the new American Embassy in Iraq must first be completed, to fulfill the contractual obligations set by the Bush administration with the Dubai contractors, right? Show me a construction project that isn't running behind. NAFTA? That's become meaningless. Although, with this latest swine flu thing, it may need to be reopened for IFAP issues. Mexico doesn't have the same standards we do for raising hogs, and ours are borderline to begin with. Here's a good domestic IFAP report:

Pew Commision

Maybe you can tell me what Krishnamurti has to say about feeding a nation. Capitalism and Entrepreneurship built this country. Corporatism made it affordable to most. But the path that Corporatism is on is unsustainable. Much of it is due to the exploding population. Much of it is greed and ideological beliefs. Almost all of the issues facing this country are around the unsustainability of the corporate system. Hindu and Buddhist philosophies are not going to solve them. At least, not in the short term. So, you "thinkers" can just go do your thesis, while we "doers" try to fix the problems and listen to you complain.

Oh, and, surely a college student should know how to post an HTML link. The only programming I've ever done was Basic and FORTRAN 77 (formula translation 1977), and even I know a few HTML tags.

Visit W3Schools!

Lauren Perry said...

Ah, forget to show the good ole hyperlink skills and next think i know i've got a middle-aged fuck berating me on my young savvy tech status.
Well sorry mike, i must have been in a hurry. exams, papers, you know how it goes.

I guess clicking on a link is just asking too much of the blogger type (welcome new definition of lazy), but for those who didn't explore, here's a description of the movie:

Physicist Bohm and philosopher Krishnamurti discuss the future of humanity, the path it is on, the nature of thought (inherently limited, destructive), and so on.
Worth the time more than so many other things on the web...

Anyway, so what does K say about feeding a nation? Yea, we built this city on rock and roll and sex and drugs and capitalist dog-eat-dog competition...
but the truth is, we don't work as well as we could like that. yea, its certainly become a quick way to get money from the market, but lets be real about the future here:
Technology will continue to grow at an exponential rate. If the advances we've made in the past year haven't awed you, you're not reading the right news(papers). Maybe newspapers are antiquated the same way tape decks are, but that doesn't mean music or good writing will ever disappear. The technology only changes. And it gets so much better so quickly.

So, flash forward however long it takes (shorter than my lifetime). We have limitless amounts of clean water, nutritious food, and if we're smart enough, a stable ecosystem and population. What will happen to the job market when robots do all our meaningless, mindless labor? When our free time skyrockets, what will we be doing? Competing? Maybe for pleasure, like sports or something. But really, we will be collaborative. We will have to be, in order to achieve the grand things that we all hope to, such as space exploration.
But lets backtrack to technology here. I'm not just talking about endless resources (not endless expansion - ENTIRELY different thing). People will be super healthy and live very much longer, perhaps with time even forever (digital transferrence of memory, read sci-fi).

So where does capitalism come into that? It doesn't. Money? Nope. Debt and credit and banks and food stamps and public school taxes? All gone. Imagine that stage of humanity when the resources to maintain a school or hospital, the energy and time required, will take such a fractional amount of human effort that we will be free to pursue,
well...
happiness.

Oh, I guess I should reply to mike again. the "doer".
Unfortunately for "doers," you need thinkers or else you'll be doing dumb shit. So hey, here's a great idea: Let's all start being nice to one another and listening to each other. I'll listen to the "doers," the people out in the field telling me all the ground-level problems (and, oh yea, been there done that in Africa, Asia and S. America), and you can listen to what others outside of your world say, and maybe get fresh ideas you'd never think of before.

Damn, i love utopian ideals.
c'mon, i am a young college idealist after all, right?
too bad for you old folks... you're missin out, being optimistic is fun.

Oh, and Zen, well, you just aren't really worth replying to. mike had so much more interesting and productive stuff to say, even if it was in that anonymous bitchy tone that every internet ranter spews out in proof of those oh-so-ugly human traits of bitterness, anger, and.. yea. all that baggage. sucks.

Lauren,
Yeah, I am a bit testy. I'm still waiting to hear from the DOE on a biomass research grant for a pilot project I'm developing. They were supposed to notify us by April 28. The deadline for the full application is June 11, and I haven't consulted with all of the architects and engineers yet, not to mention the attorneys and accountants.
I figured that little HTML jab would spark something. I was just listening to a debate on whether journalism majors should be forced to take HTML classes.
Technology? Yeah, I was a technology major, back when optics and photonics were interesting. Now it's all nano-bot technology. Soon we will all be cybernetic beings, with little nanobots running around our heads, connecting us to the "internet" or supernet or probably Googlenet, with just a thought. And through our bodies curing all of our diseases before they have a chance to get started. I may be a moldy old middle aged fuck, but I am on an NSF advisory panel, or alumni council, or something like that, whatever.
Thinkers? Reminds me too much of researchers. You know, the ones that spend 30 years studying every strain of algae on the planet, but have no way of mass producing it in a cost effective way. Open ponds? "Bubble columns"? Photobioreactors? Give me a break. And when someone who is part doer and part thinker, with no alphabet soup after his name comes up with a practical idea, he is politely dismissed. (Well, we'll see.)

Buddha? Believe it or not, I keep a copy of the Dhammapada on my coffee table, right next a copy of Aesop's Fables. Interesting pair, huh? I only had one philosophy class in college and it wasn't Intro... I skipped that and took Logic. Got an A. Still have the book by Howard Kahane. Most of my classes were math, physics and engineering. But don't let that fool you. I was the lead guitar player in a rock band back in the 80s. Got the scars and criminal record to prove it. But I'm feeling much better now.
You're right about the growth of technology. But the thing that bothers me is that it is all based on the same science. There hasn't really been any major scientific discoveries since Einstein, except maybe Hawking. Most of the technology is still based mostly on Maxwell's equations of electro-magnetism. It seems we're more focused on technology than science. One major scientific discovery could make all of current technology obsolete.

Lauren Perry said...

Ah, its okay mike, i've been testy too - almost didn't graduate for some DUMB reasons, lemme tell ya...

Biomass research sounds fascinating. So what's your pilot study about?

You're very much correct about technology, it's nothing if we do not act responsibly to use it in the right way (and there IS a "right" and a "wrong" way to go about all this).
You're also right about thinkers. But again, the way we apply our tools, including the brain, is essential. If someone highly intellectual just sits in their office and reads all day (and i see this in college..) they will have a severe disconnect with the abstract ideas and the concrete world. this is one of the biggest problems in african aid right now, because people are just dumping money into the problems, no one really knows where it goes or what problems at ground level need it.
Chaos.

anyway, logic is cool, but also suffers from that disconnect - learning it is like learning algebra, and its hard for the average student to use that knowledge in real critical thinking situations. i'm re-writing a logic text book as an independent research study with a professor here, and our main goal is to try to make that real-world connection...

You don't think there have been great scientific discoveries? Quantum physics? Landing on Mars (finding salt water there)? Voyager leaving the solar system? Discovering life that has evolved not to reproduce (ants in Brazil)? And computers, I can't even keep up with protein folding and electrode-stimulus-from-the-brain virtual reality games...
i could go on... and i would, but i have to present on krishnamurti now.
yay.

ZenGrouch said...

"hmmmm....bashing someone who's furthering their Education for a better life?"...

Nope, you missed the mark again.

I'm bashing someone who has discovered the works of actual 'Independent Thinkers' then cherry picks the thoughts of others who have actually lived, then tells us that we should listen to what he/she believes to be relevant in life, although that person has probably never lived in the actual world.

I see this kind of person as a shark sucker, eating the scraps in return for removing parasites, smaller than he/she.

This is the kind of person who feels that an "education" is the do all and end all, and not just the beginning of the journey. A diploma is something to be stapled to one's forehead, showing that he/she is indeed *better* than low achievers.

A person blinded by their intelligence as well as ignorance. Someone who equates a paycheck with who they are, never knowing the latter, yet quick to tell others to stop and listen, so that they will be a better person, as he/she is, if they would only follow their lead and conform to what is truly the only way.

OK?...

This is quite different from someone who educates themselves, to learn, rather than just inflate their already massive egos.

In other words, a phony who learned to play the game set up by other phonies.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must be off to *correctly* decipher the Dead Sea Scrolls...

This is actually a comment about your recent show. In reference to marriage and fidelity you compared staying faithful to your spouse as having toast every day the rest of your life. I'm not a evangelist, I'm a Democrat and I enjoy your show and laugh out loud. However, my husband and I took offense to that comment. You get mad when people judge other people because they are different. Just because you haven't been lucky enough to have a great marriage doesn't mean you know or understand a great marriage. For example, your toast anology. You can have plain toast, Texas Toast, French toast, toast with peanut butter, toast with jelly, toast dipped in olive oil, etc. etc. Just because the basic ingredient is bread doesn't mean it has to be boring. There are thousands of variations. We've been married for 30 years and our secret is that we still treat each other like we are dating - we call each other several times a day to just say hello or I love you. We talk, debate, dance, etc. just like when we were dating even though we have three kids. We also both keep physically fit and trim. However, even if we didn't do those things, I was surprised to hear you doing exactly what you appear abhor in other people - forcing your personal views on others. Don't judge marriages just because you do not have one yourself.

anyway, i guess i might still try to explain something, but only for myself, not for you (did i mention its fun watching you react with lots of anger and energy?)

i said this place had turned to ground for kingergarten banter SPECIFICALLY because of you, zen.

i said no one cracks a newspaper SPECIFICALLY from what you were saying - (and NO i do NOT mean electronic sources) it seems like you're a headline browser at online news sites (MSNBC?), you probably browse some pundits, editorials, bloggers, and all you do is listen and read to people like you - angry, far-left-wing, mean, (you all probably have other traits in common, like being fat or stupid or something)

and when you do come here to "debate" (as a philosophy major, i really hesitate using that word)
with other people who do NOT think like you do,
in here, zen, all you're doing is shouting
no one really cares what you say,
and nothing of what you say is interesting, or informative
its just insulting
and loud
and emphasized like it could be important (but, its not)

by the way, that video i posted would have done you wonders. had you taken the *ahem* time, and energy, to click on a god damn link, maybe you'd have figured out what it was about? i mean, you know the concept: internet, information highway, world at your fingertips..

Here's one that even you might be able to appreciate. I guess you're aware of the lifting of the ban on federally funded embryonic stem cell research, right? Bad thing for Bible toting, gun slinging, flag suckers, right? Well, here's something the national media didn't really pick up on, but NPR did. A few days after lifting the ban, Obama amended the Executive Order to only allow research on fetuses that have been abandoned in fertility clinics, and reinstating the ban on abortion clinic fetuses. That's a pretty "centrist" thing to do. Especially when he didn't have to do that. He could have said "fuck you, it's my way or the highway". You know, the way Bush/Cheney ran the country.

NO! What I'm saying is I help the troops, directly, and anyone else with a substance problem, when the VA turns their backs on them. There's a big difference between "supporting our troops" and actually doing something to help.

Mr. Maher,

There wasn't a proper address so that I might be able to send a letter, but I wanted to say "Thank You" because I saw your documentary and it was very eye opening for me.

I am a recovering Catholic and have been for a while. Although I no longer believe any religious book, I still believe there is something higher than us. (I sincerely hope you don't take offense to this. I read a lot of sarcasm in these blogs :))

Thanks for steering us in the right direction.

I heard your feelings on how religious people "pat you on the head" in a condescending way, and I understand how you feel. I don't have to tell you that it can be very emotional for a religious person when someone starts asking questions.

When I thought about the small percentage of people that are on your "side", I felt, as a teacher, that I should let you know you're making a difference in a good way.

Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Kathryn

The lastest news, well you met joe the plumber, now you can meet Ken the Handyman, one county in the state of florida, we won't mention which one, won't allow him to repaint foreclosed properties that Investors bought, the claim is he must be a Contractor, no offense to the Handyman, but a monkey can do it, other counties do allow this, but this one doesn't according to them and claim it's a state law, but yet other counties allow it, so which is it a state law or just a county that doesn't like handymen? As you and the world knows Fl isn't exactly booming and all the while allowing illegals to work there, but not Americans, by imposing some B.S restrictions. yeah, were on the right track...

Lauren Perry said...

Bill, you must be from Florida for that to be as important as it sounds to you.
no offense here, i live on the chesapeake bay which i'm sure you don't give a rats ass about, but which is very important to me. location, location, location.

but, i am getting really tired of the real bill, Bill Maher, bringing up all these stupid, useless fluff pieces. he sounds like he really cares about that shit, too.

Bill

I got news for you. There isn't one investor, at that level, that will let anyone on a job without contractor's liability insurance. Not to mention Worker's Comp. A monkey can do it, yes. But a monkey can also accidentally burn a house down, or rupture a water pipe, or any number of things. The investor's insurance company does an audit. They check to see who they are paying and for what. And they want to see proof of insurance for any contracting work. Otherwise the investor gets back charged by his own insurance company. Companies across the country are cracking down on this big time. Laws have nothing to do with it. If the investor wants to pick up the added insurance costs, or pay cash (which is unlikely) then Kenny can do the job. If not, Kenny better find a good insurance agent, and buy the insurance, and pay taxes like every reputable contractor on the planet. What an idiot. I wouldn't dream of doing a job without insurance. That's just asking for trouble. You tell Ken, he's lucky if he's allowed to fix Grandma's hand rail without insurance.

And Lauren, let me tell you, this shit is important. I just came from a contractor's meeting. Nothing, and I mean nothing is going on out there. Banks aren't even lending money to reputable commercial builders, with proven track records. That means nobody works. Do you have any idea just how much money that takes out of the economy. Not just the contractors and their employees, but the real estate and insurance agents and the companies that manufacture wholesale and retail building products. It's bad. Real bad. This is normally my busiest time of year and I've got next to nothing. I'm picking up a few of those foreclosed repaints, that were bought up by the vultures for next to nothing, and they don't want to pay nothing, and I have to directly compete with ken the fuckhead who doesn't pay taxes or carry insurance. I'd like to meet Ken. I'd kick him square in the balls!

ZenGrouch said...

"A monkey can do it, yes. But a monkey can also accidentally burn a house down"...

...or it can be made to *look* that way, if you start using day labor in an area where there are strong unions.

"no offense here, i live on the chesapeake bay which i'm sure you don't give a rats ass about, but which is very important to me. location, location, location."...

Hmmm... do you make it a point to live in municipalities where it takes that long to evict for non-payment of rent?

Yes... they call you the breeze!

Zen

Most unions don't fuck with residential work. Just the big commercial jobs. At least around here. Even in Center City Philadelphia, where the unions are real strong, we completely gutted a Brownstone and weren't bothered by any unions. Nothing really would get done. Most people can't afford a contractor that charges $75/man-hour.

Lauren Perry said...

mike,

i see your point about the importance. my mother works in real estate, and in our area there is a lot of potential for development, but no one is lending, or buying, etc etc...

my larger point was that stories like joe the plumber, and this ken guy if it turned into that, are blown out of proportion to their relevance. what we need is a much larger restructuring of the design and growth of cities and residentials. i wouldn't want my mother's business to continue the way it has been - but people don't do well with change, they like to try to keep things the way they were working before

except that things weren't working well, it just seemed like they did.

but here's my really really large point:
what happens when all the victorian houses have been refurbished and painted? should you go to another area to find the same work? should you do something else?
what happens when everyone has a home (population leveling off is an assumption here), what happens to those construction workers? the real estate people?
when do we look around and say,
ENOUGH
?

ZenGrouch said...

"Most unions don't fuck with residential work."...

Really? I would think with a shrinking pie, the unions would try their best to make sure that contractors use union workers, if not for painting trim, but for plumbing and electrical work.

And I wouldn't be upset to see unions working outside of the law, when it comes to dealing with workers who are here illegally.

Fight fire with fire.

But unions seem pussified from when my dad use to be frightened when it came to painting the house. He actually thought the union would come for him.

But then he saw some crazy union shit in his day.

Lauren,

Nothing lasts forever. No matter how good a job is done, it's only going to last so long. A good roof is only going to last 10 years, at best. Except, of course, those old slate roofs - I've seen ones over 100 years old. But no one can afford slate anymore. Also, a paint job in Phoenix can last 30 years, but along the Jersey shore, it's only going to last about 5. That was the way my grandfather ran his business years ago. He had clients that would call him back every 5-8 years to repaint the house. My grandmother's house is a modular. It came with a 5 year warranty. Well it's 7 years old and guess what? It needs repairs. Five year carpet means 5 years. Stuff is always getting torn down and rebuilt. Nothing lasts forever. Oh, I said that already.

Zen, like I said, unions are only interested in the big commercial jobs. Illegals? They have enough problems worrying about satisfying their Affirmative Action requirements. When work gets thin, they might send a couple guys with an inflatable giant rat to a new gas station or bank branch. But there's four new casinos going up in AC. Big fuckers. Gotta go. My buddy just flew in to NYC from LA. He's a grip on NCIS. Haven't seen him in years. Later

Lauren Perry said...

Hey mike,
Again, you make a good point about repairs and such. I'm sure many workers at car factories thought the same until a big machine took over their job.
not that i'm saying machines will paint houses some day, but lets say we develop paint that doesn't need touch ups.

there will always be some forms of labor jobs, but they are dwindling. technology is catching up, its changing the face of everything, taking over our "meaningless" jobs and making a lot more room for meaningful ones. we need to adapt our society to this, as such, but we are hesitant because we cling to the concept of dog-eat-dog capitalism, when what we need to survive is participation, working together, talking together, LISTENING to each other!...
this is all absolutely necessary to solve problems of 21st century size. capitalism works because we are still very animal-like and competitive, but we are moving away from that. this is the trend, working together, interconnection, a butterfly's wingbeat causing Katrina. this is the world today, and capitalism fails in this world.

Fuck Rouseau. Anyone who pays for sex is a Republican: don't let their BS fool ya.

In your socialist gangbang there will always - always - be someone more needy than you. Its a chain reaction that cashes in on success, producing nothing.

Technology will not save you. For every advance, 50% of the expected gain is realized and people become 50% dumber, lazier and... like you. Stupid idealist, put your money where your mouth is.

The primary reason why we are where we are today is because each congress grabs as much loot as they can, without regard for anything else. Tell me you don't see this. The only thing that trickles down is the jism of the cold upper middle class, when the will divides the estate. This takes centuries.

Get a job, then research that, fool.

again, Rousseau is who i quoted, not Che Guevara

as R says, you cannot force a man to do anything
he must do it because he is a free man, with free will, and he wants to do it

we do want to work together, even you work with others in your job you keep raving about, or in dozens of other situations.

the real fact is that we are becoming a more interconnected society, and we've got to get used to each other

we need to be kinder, better neighbors, not just willing to throw change in a homelessman's cup, but to get off our lazy asses and build him a god damn home
(which i've done, does that count as work?)

it isn't really a sense of charity as much as... cooperation

that's what bothers you, that someone takes your precious little promissory note from your precious little hands?

it's not about the taking, as i say, it's about the giving,

when we all want all of us to be better, instead of wanting only ME to be better and everyone else can go suck it..

lens, name one thing significant you have ever done - but not for yourself, like winning a fucking pagent or something, but for someone else

me? off the top of my head? filmed two documentaries in africa and asia (currently getting int'l fame) about health issues (agent orange in vietnam, malaria in ghana)

so, my point? you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about - don't worry, no one else does either, you're not alone, just sad and useless

A job to support our family(but not controlled or owned by the Government) and not worry about where our next meal is coming from but in the meantime, giving a meal to someone who needs it? Not scared of a plane or any other suspicious event that may take other lives? Living each day, not taking for granted of our freedom?

That "Little House on the Prairie " mentality is very quaint. I think there's a Commune in Ukiah, CA you can join. Either that or there may be a cabin once occupied by Ted Kaczynski that may be available.

Lauren,

I can understand your passion for wanting to help the people of third world countries. But let me pose a question. What did Singapore have in the 1950s, that these countries don't have. They had a divide and rule framework set up by European Colonists just like many of the West African countries. They had limited resources and little clean drinking water. Now, they have the largest reverse osmosis water purification system in the world. The British gave them self rule, and they ran with it. Why can't these other countries do what they did?

Unrelated but didn't know where to post this. I saw this story on CNN about an Agnostic speaker. I thought he would be a great guest for Real Time. Here is a link to the story....after reading more about agnosticism it seems to be the most reasonable position to take....

You're wrong again. I'm not going to list my curriculum vitae to a twit like you.

I don't do selfless acts; it is far more rewarding to put a man on his own feet than to carry him.

"You destroy the fabric of a human soul each and everytime you attack."...

Yet you keep calling me out...

Christ, if I step away from the computer for a few hours, you inundate me with your pathetic requests for acknowledgment.

You really are a total loon.

What is it, Daddy didn't play catch with you?

"The Conservatives aren't scared!"...

Well... the ones with half a brain aren't "scared"...

...I'd say they are more *resigned* the the fact that they're totally fucked.

The ones like Cheney and Limbaugh are too stupid to see how screwed they are.

Either that, or they see how deep the shit is they're standing in, so they want to start a huge shit fight, taking the country down with 'em, fumbling in the dark trying to find the 'Self Destruct' button.
