A Truce Proposal for the Republican Party

By Bill Maher

No matter who you talk to on the right about the frothing insanity and Congressional belligerence directed at President Obama, inevitably they’ll all raise the same point: You did it to Bush when he was in office. Which wasn’t equivalent, or even close, but this seems to be something we can never get beyond – this tit for tat. Now, I don’t remember Democrats deciding, as an electoral strategy, to oppose everything the president proposed or did, even when they agreed with it, and to use the filibuster in ways never seen before in order to deny him legislative victories so that the public would not see the change they were promised and vote against the president’s party in the midterms – all of which has happened to Obama. No, I don’t remember the Democrats doing that. Quite the opposite. I remember the Democrats saying, “Oh, you want a pre-emptive war? Aye-aye, Captain!”

But let’s not get into that. I come in peace.

And I’ll even go first, and make a gesture of goodwill: I apologize for blaming Bush for the conditions at Walter Reed. When that Dana Priest/Anne Hull story came out and we found that Walter Reed was in rough shape and had mold and exposed wires and rats and nothing was being done to fix it, we all added that to the growing list of Bush administration scandals, along with Iraq, and Abu Ghraib, torture, the response to Katrina, outing a CIA agent, etc. But it really didn’t deserve to be there. Because Bush wasn’t in charge of the wiring at Walter Reed, or even aware of it. So, yes, that was unfair and I take it back. Bush wasn’t directly to blame for the conditions at Walter Reed. There. That was overly-partisan.

Your turn. …I’ll wait. It’ll be like the Dayton Peace Accords. We could even hold it in Dayton. I’m sure they’d appreciate the business.

And here’s my proposal: if we agree not to go crazy on Mitt Romney should he be elected, and I don’t take to the airwaves days after his inauguration and say that I hope he fails and pledge to oppose everything he does like Rush Limbaugh did after Obama was elected, then Republicans have to agree to chill the fuck out should Obama be re-elected, and to let him run the country, and staff positions without needlessly filibustering, and let bills pass in the Senate with a simple majority, and to finally shut the hell up about the socialism and the Kenya and the America-hating.
…Deal?

Thank you. How can people not understand that what they're saying amounts to America-hating. Are americans really that stupid? We just take whatever strikes our fancy from the news and then play it on repeat to our friends on Facebook? I'm starting to get pretty tired of it.

I think they just need to get rid of the Rep party all together. Why have an election BHO will win with with no effort at all? The Bozo's that the Retard party is fronting, like the have a chance!!! They have lost for years time to disband and have one party!!! Let's send the GOP to space and forget about them!!!!

Okay, this is a little off the subject, but in the general vicinity. I call it, "Things I'd Like to See": Arizona Republic headlines read, "Jan Brewer Frisks Mitt Romney". Today, Joe Arpaio stopped Mitt Romney in traffic and demanded to see his green card. Jan Brewer told Joe that unless Romney can show proof of citizenship, he will have to go back to Mexico along with his kin.

I live in Arizona. It's very difficult.

can someone explain to me why in colombia, a country ridden by armed guerrillas, has no problem with health coverage, everyone has the right to be treated and medicated if needed, amounts are deducted by law off salary if working or subsidized by the government if not, and with courts dedicated to upholld and protect quickly and unrelentlesly people rights including fair medical assisstance and a country like the united states still is battling over this issue year after year?

Speaking of birthing. Can an extraterrestrial become president of the United States? According to his religion, Mitt Romney originates from the planet Kolob (just like the Osmonds). Come to think of it, this might also help to explain Donald Trump's otherworldly hair.

During W.'s election years celebrities did just as they are doing now, backing and bashing the republicans nominee and it didn't matter he became President and was re-elected. America knows that celebrities for the most part are, well, not very intelligent, just good at acting like they are. You Bill Maher are no exception. You offer no original thought or ideas, simply regurgitated celebrity hoopla/hullabaloo. Citizens that work daily performing tasks that makes the world go around, makes the world a better place have the wisdom to ignore and weed through the rhetoric of celebrities like yourself. Celebrities offer very little of importance to the world. They offer entertainment, which on the totem pole of importance is near the bottom. Therefore when a celebrity endorses a candidate it's a red flag not to vote for that person. America knows not to follow the advice of the feeble minded. Obama was not elected because of the influence of celebrities, hate to bust your bubble, but rather because Americans wanted positive change. They believed Obama would spur that change, but now those who voted for Obama feel like fools. The impressionable will vote for him again, but those votes aren't the votes that won it for him the first time it was the votes of the true hard working middle class that won him the election. He will not get those votes this time around because the hard working middle class like me live by a motto; fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me. America will not be fooled this time no matter how many celebrities endorse Obama or how many celebrities tell citizens they are ignorant and uneducated if they vote for a Republican. Americans are aware that the opinions of celebrities are unimportant at best.
