No News Is Bad News

By Bill Maher

New Rule: Network news has to be renamed "Cool Video We Think You’ll Watch." Not long ago, Fox News was showing a live police chase of a stolen car in Phoenix and the suspect pulled over, got out of the car and shot himself in the head. Or as the Fox anchor called it, "Exercising his Second-Amendment rights." There were apologies all around for the "insensitive" and "wrong" airing of a live suicide. But what about the bigger question? What's a national "news" network doing showing a local police chase?

First off, I'm a loyal watcher/fan of Bill Maher. You are completely wrong about the Fox News anchor saying the shooter, "exercised his 2nd Amendment rights." Shep Smith apologized profusely for what his network showed. Maybe some of the anchors in later shows said what you say, but when you say "the anchor", you infer it was the one that was live.

Agree, Shep did not like that moment and let the viewers know. By the way, how many dealerships went out of business after "the bailout" ?? How much of that money was misspent or unaccounted for?? Dig ya Bill: Pro decriminalization of Pot & freedom from being ostracized for being an Atheist. But C'mon!

It's called a 'joke.' Keep watching, he'll probably tell more!

Agreed about Shep. I can't believe that it's the first time I've watched in about 6 months. And a car chase. o well.

Bill, I usually like your comments, and those I don't like piss me off. However, I do think that Obama is getting a raw deal. Sites like Rove's "America" or whatever it is do a good smear along with Limbaugh. Limbaugh, tho, is a hater bait etc.

Anyway, Bill, I like your show, tho we don't get to see it often. No HBO in the house.

Keep up the good work.

Why is it that no one is asking the candidates "Will you sign a document that states you will not remove the home mortgage intrest deduction from the taxes of middle class."

Pussyfooting with Coulter:
Love Bill and respect his consistent contributions for more than a decade giving voice to our opinions.Personally appreciate him keeping us semi-sane through such difficult times. Can't imagine how someone of color heard and saw his softball interview with A.C. No problem to give her a chance to parade her hate filled propaganda and certainly not as disappointing as Obama's last debate but he treated his long time friend with kid gloves and rolled over and didn't show up either. First time I can say for Family & Friends that we were embarrassed by Bill's performance.

Everyone is asking if this president knew what was going on over there with the diplomats. Well we were asking who knew about the 9/11 bombers taking flying lessons and not wanting to learn how to land. I think more were killed by Bush not paying attention to what information was being given to the White House!!!

You let Darrel Issa walk all over you - he is a bully - a shameful self promoter who's every other phrase was "the truth is" usually when someone starts a sentence with "the truth is" everything they say after that is a lie. In poker its called a "tell" - he is a insecure bully who has to lie to cover up his incompetence and lack of real knowledge.

Coulter is a very sick person. It was the first time I ever saw or heard her speak - she has some kind of personality disorder - very weird that she has become rich using mental illness as her main calling card.

George said...

You and Ben Afleck must have gotten stoned before the show - Issa was wack and you all let him dominate.

George said...

False equivalency is the operative phrase of the year - you said in response to Alfleck that MSNBC is the equivalent of FOX for the left - nonsense - Morning Joe is a Republican and no one on Fox is any where near a Democrat. Fox "news" anchors regularly repeat GOP talking point lies as truth - MSNBC may have a left leaning but reality has a liberal bias - every other Network is controlled by corporate masters who benefit from GOP tax policies - even MSNBC is controlled by a corporate master - I don't know how they get away with calling the b.s. so much.

Bill! Your show has always been at the top of my familys watch list. A breath of Fresh Air in an arena filled with the shit frothing from ACoulter's mouth. She seems perfect to front for the Republican party.

Obviously the suspect was a Democrat, or perhaps someone who watches PBS.

I always found it strange that the Fox network, the conservative network, was built on the success of Married with Children, and continues to derive revenue from shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy. The word "hypocrites" comes to mind.

So Bill, I have been watching your show(s) for years, and I have never seen a regular person as a guest.

It's always celebrities, the rich, and people with an agenda. Why not have someone ordinary like me on as a panelist?

Train-wrecks attract viewers! Just ask Sarah Palin.

Here's a link to my latest blog. I'm looking forward to an invite. :-)

Please forgive me for being off-topic but I wonder if Bill has ever read this and if so, what he thought of it.--

Love---

Think about love. Think about the kindness of love, the comfort of love, the acceptance and warmth of love, the simplicity and generosity and forgiveness of love. Think about the gentleness of love, the patience of love, the compassion of love. Think about the refuge and relief of love. Think about love.---

That, I believe, is God. Love itself, perfect, eternal and infinite, flowing among all of us, shared as our birthright, our love uniting us and living on within God. There is nothing to fear. It's love itself that is the God we seek, here within all of us and living on forever. Love has always been here.---

The rest, I believe, is nature. Our bodies and our minds, the self we identify as soul, heredity and upbringing, all part of nature. There is no evil, only nature, a broad scape from marvels of beauty to tragic aberrations, all nature, all fleeting. All of nature shares the same preoccupations at its own level...we seek food, continuation of our species, pleasure, safety, status and territory. Those are the things of nature and the joys they give us are the gifts of nature.---

But our greatest days are made of love, in hours of unbearable loss, it's love that comforts us. We thrive on it, we long for it. With love, we do what we would have thought impossible, through love we make the miracles that others are praying for. It's through our own love that God comes into the world.---

Our prayers have already been answered. We have been given love, it is already here for us. Hunger and sickness, sadness and loneliness, fear and cruelty...what we can't overcome with love, we can comfort with love so that none suffer alone and abandoned.---

This, I believe, is our purpose. To free our love from the fearful cautions of nature, to let love dissolve the divisions that separate us, to look for love in every other being and find God. With love, we live as in heaven.---

Think about love often, nurture love within yourself, give over some time of your days to meditate on love, to pray that we will have more love. Think about love and pray that one day we will all have the love we need for all the world.---

This is not a religion and there is no need for money, preachers, books, or buildings. The truth is in love itself and the only outward sign of love is love. This is for you, offered in hope that it will help. The person who wrote this is an ordinary person of unexceptional virtue who will say nothing further.---

Mr. Maher. Why don't you draw attention to the remarkable visual likeness of PAUL RYAN to the brilliant British comedian MR. BEAN? They both have the same hair-style; nose, eyes and INANE smile!

Coulter Interview: Huge disappointment! I have never seen Bill not correct someone who he knows is completely WRONG. A.C. would not know racism if it smacked her in the face. Or as Bill said, passive aggressively, "who knows more about racism than a blond haired girl from Connecticut?"

Anonymous said...

I just saw the Ann Coulter bit about race. Very disappointed that Bill was completely caught off guard by her saying that there is no racism in America anymore.

He could have directed her to this website, which was created when Obama started to win the nomination in 2008.

No racism, indeed.

Bill, I have been an avid fan for many years now and I would thank you for the tireless work you have committed to over these years. The work I refer to is revealing to the American public and the world the evil that lurks in the shadows of politics and religion in America. We live in very perilous times. The world stands on the brink of economic collapse. Innocent people die daily worldwide from the result of American political policies. President Obama seems reluctant to change this course of destruction to the dismay of many. His reluctance is justified as witnessed by history and the fates of Lincoln and Kennedy. The media is a whore that can be bought by the highest bidder and has left the American people lost and confused. There is only one voice I hear calling for truth in the wilderness (please forgive my reference to to scripture) and that is yours. Through your wit and humor many eyes are opened and a voice is given to the voiceless. If the conservative right is allowed to gain power again at this precarious time in history, I believe it will mean the end of life as we know it. I am begging you to do everything in your power to continue to fight for truth and justice.
